I bought this game through steam because I thought the characters were cool and they did a nice job with the layout and visuals. So far, it hasn't disappointed me in those respects.
My problem is that I've never been what you call a "gamer". I have MOHPA and a couple of other older titles, but that's really it. I like TF2, but I suck at it. And there seems to be a certain sub-culture surrounding gaming and gamers, and there is clearly a protocol and manner set that I'm unfamiliar with.
I'm looking for tips on...
How to play better in an FPS.
How to play better at TF2 (I like the sniper)
The dos and donts of gaming etiquette.
It would be perfect if I could make a group of online friends who play the same game, so that I might have a team.

I know how you feel. I play it once in awhile and feel out of place because I don't know what the bleep is going on. It is a pretty cool game though. Best advice I can give you if you really like playing is to just play it and get used to it. If people start being buttheads move to another server.
My daughter is a pro. Has been playing TFC/2 for probably six or seven years. Ran her own sizable clan at one point. They practiced two days a week and everything. Here favorite is the sniper I believe. Although she plays all the characters. Maybe I can get her to stop by and post some tips.

I'm not a major fps player, either... and in my experience, gaming etiquette seems to be limited to filling the chat channel with "your gay" and being a twat in general.
But then, I used to play World of Warcraft a lot.

Sounds like most of those who you shared server time with were barely old enough to get a driver's license...

mjc, that is VERY likely.
In fact, I didn't play WoW for a very long time for that very reason. I couldn't tolerate all the 13 year olds any more. What are kids that young doing spending all their time on a MMORPG anyway?
Not watching cartoons?
Actually, not doing a lot of things, including learning how to spell and proper grammar...

You said it!
Of course, when you correct them you out yourself, as evidenced by the chorus of "ur gay" and "I dont care abot grammer."

Yawningdog, the TF2 forums has a big section on Class-Specific Tips & Strategies. (http://www.teamfortress2fort.com/forums/ClassSpecificTipsStrategies-47.aspx)
This thread has gotten me interested in it again and I have been playing the last several days.

I jumped on TF2 for the first time last night. It's really fun! I suck at fps, but it's all good. I had fun anyway.
