Umm...I wonder if it has anything to do with the fact that Intel is refusing to go with Vista for its internal computers?

Given that Microsoft traditionally supports operating systems for only ten years after their launch this move can be seen as an admission that it is not expecting some businesses to bother upgrading to Vista.
For some businesses read many businesses.

Vista is a "dog" and now it's official!

So what we have, after all the hype and time taken...

Vista, the ultimate game platform.

There is a 'tweak' around to give Server 2008 many/most of the 'bells and whistles' of Vista...but the irony is that Server 2008:Workstation out performs Vista.

I was reloading a register at a major department store a few weeks back and while I was doing so I noticed it was vista. I was on the phone with one of their help desk techs to get a code that was needed and mentioned to him that I was surprised to see they are actually using vista on their registers. His irritated response was "I don't want to talk about it". :p

OK, well that's fine and dandy if server 2008 works better than vista, but doesn't server 2008 cost like $700 for the OEM version?

Those registers must have some pretty hefty hardware under the 'hood'...otherwise it would be faster to grab a paper/pen and manually write out a receipt.

Yeah...unfortunately. Most of the people pushing it are ones who can get their hands on it for free...legitimately. Or a business/office environment that already has a multi-install license. A 25 CAL goes for around $3000...

While most registers out there right now are still in the P3- (Northwood A) P4 era, these particular registers actually have a s775 P4 with HT enabled and 1GB DDR2-533. The network reload took about 45 minutes from download to POS ready screen. Not bad at all.

Some of the brand new installs we have been doing actually have Pentium Dual Cores in them. Which is great because it's painful when you have to reboot a P3/128-256MB PC100 register several times, or worse do a reload with all the POS and security software that is on them. :(

wait. didn't the US Government say that "we found no convincing reason to upgrade to Windows Vista" or something along that line?

Yes they did.

Even stranger, Microsoft is now rolling out Dx11 which will roil the graphics market yet again.

All you guys who bought Dx10 video cards to get the latest/greatest, your new cards just became obsolete again.

Isn't that the way for all things computer...

I don't think we have to worry about DX11 for quite awhile. Heck, DX10 is barely being used as it is. Getting a DX10 card right now is mostly about the better performance of the later cards simply because they are better and very little to do with DX10.

But if DX10 is not being used right now, wouldn't the developers jump over it and go directly to DX11?

Well, coders have been slow to adopt DX10 code into their games, how slow will DX11 adaptation be? 2012, maybe? Windows 10? LOL! When will DX11 be available, even just the SDK for software companies? Certainly not for some time.

They say DX11 will be compatible with DX10. What that means exactly I don't know.

My best guess without any solid info is that we will won't even need to think about it at least until we are ready to chuck the current cards and buy new anyway. It will probably still be vaporware at that point as well.

I won't lose any sleep over it. If I were going to buy a 4750 or even two of them tomorrow I still wouldn't. ;)

2008 server works good, but I have not seen aero on it. Servers don't really need or support that kind of thing. I upgraded our domain to 2008 DC's a few months ago. Was very smooth. Here is a nice trick for anyone working with Dell servers. 2008 requires a DVD ROM. They charge a lot for upgrades but, Dell Laptop DVD ROMS work just fine in the slot.....

UAC is a bit annoying and I disabled the firewall. I'm not sure the firewall feature is relevant to an Enterprise enviroment. The stupid thing did not even come with the ability to automatically allow DNS when promoted to a Domain Controller.... RPC didn't work either.

All the new laptops coming in are Vista. I have not heard anything bad about them. No upgrades though. Last I saw Vista was over 180 million units sold. In my experience, businesses of any size have a slow adoption of any OS. I know some large companies that still have departments on 98SE. However, you can bet that there is a large group of people who want Vista on their new office machines. People actually get snippy if someone has, a supposedly, more advanced machine than someone else. You see it all the time.

I'm with Jlreich on DX11. Until DX10 becomes mainstream why even worry about DX11.

I bought a new HP Laptop last year. It had 1GB of RAM, and had Vista installed.

It works ok, but I got rid of that bloody Aero interface, and the UAC.

I eventually increased the RAM to the maximum of 2 GB, and it runs better.

I keep a homebuilt XP computer around...

Funny thing is that HP won't support my scanner on a Vista computer.

So that's a good reason to keep my XP desktop around for a second PC.
