View Full Version : Read only files?
I recently transferred files from one computer to another using a direct cable hook up. I then put them onto a cd and transferred them to a third computer in a different location. All of these files are now read only files. Is this the usual case or did I do something wrong? Is there any way I can change these files so that I can edit them?
Thanks,
Hoop
What version of Windows?
In 9x, right click on the file and select properties, on the General tab at the bottom there will be a serie of boxes for the Attributes, uncheck the "read only" one, in an NT based one the procedure is similar, except you need to either own the file (it is one of your files that you have the permissions for) or be logged in as admin...

Thanks, that did the trick. I'm curios as to why all of those files were converted over as read only files. The computer where they originated was running Win98SE, they were cabled over to a computer running WinME where they were transfered to a CD, then onto a computer running Win98SE.There were many files involved in this transfer and it was very time consuming to uncheck all of the read only attributes. Is there a way that I can avoid this in the future?
Thanks,
Hoop

When you write files to a CDR, the medium is WORM { write once, read many }-you can't change the files after they've been burned to the CD so windows { all versions } show the file attributes as read-only, 'cause you cannot make changes to them on that medium.
When you copy them over to your drive, they retain their original attributes; to change all of them at one time, use the Cntrl+A key to select them all, then right click and de-select the read only attribute; this saves you from doing this to each individual file.
There is no current way i know of to prevent this; and you wouldn't want to anyways-if you have software that you distribute among many people, would you want some unscrupulous hacker to insert a virii code into your carefully compiled code?! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/eek.gif
