Personal Digital Assistant is

It's a PDA an example of one would be a Plam Pilot. Another example of a device that has "firmware" would be a modem.

atc_traffic856,

HERE'S (http://www.pcguide.com/ref/hdd/op/logicFirmware-c.html) some additional information from our "Mother Ship" which you might find helpful! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/wink.gif

Also, although the PC Guide Forums' response time to a query is usually remarkably fast (which is pretty kewl in and of itself http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif)! Oft times if you need immediate help...don't forget the invaluable GOOGLE (http://http:www.google.com) search! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/wink.gif

I've actually dropped complete BIOS strings in there and come up with Mother Board IDs!

Actually firmware can be considerd to be any programming that resides on some variety of ROM chip...which means that even the BIOS is a type of firmware... even devices other than personal computers have it...your car, your mocrowave, TV, VCR etc....

Firmware is a special-purpose module of low-level (e.g., hexadecimal, machine code) software that serves two purposes. First, it acts like a BIOS, enabling the device to take stock of its capabilities and to render those capabilities functional. Second, it coordinates the activities of the hardware during normal operation and contains programming constructs used to perform those operations. For example, in a typical modem, the firmware will be a factor in establishing the modem's data rate, command set recognition, and special feature implementation.

* the above definition was grabbed from a Google (http://www.google.com) search......
