Taken from here is: (http://www.pcworld.com/resource/printable/article/0,aid,52263,00.asp)
You can synchronize your local Outlook Express and Hotmail address books on Microsoft's server. First, set up Outlook Express to access your Hotmail account. Select Tools, Accounts and click Add, Mail to start the Internet Connection Wizard. Enter your Hotmail e-mail address in the top text box on the second page.
Once the account is set up, go to Outlook Express's address book and select Tools, Synchronize Now. If that option isn't there, select Tools, Options, check Do not share information..., and click OK twice. Exit both the address book and Outlook Express, and then reopen them. Now you can select Tools, Synchronize Now.

Ok. Thanks. It worked well.

Allright. I noticed it again. That process puts everything in my Hotmail into Outlook Express but not the other way around. I can use my Hotmail account from anywere in the world with an internet connection but can only use my address book if I am here.
If I go strictly Hotmail(no Outlook Express)the access is inconvenient and not as easy and I am limited to 2Mb storage.

Hey Jes,
I don't use Hotmail, so I am not familiar with how it is set up. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/frown.gif
If the address book is accessable on your hard drive (ex. Hotmail folder>accessories>address book.) or something similar, open Outlook express, open your address book, go to file>export>address book, select the format that hotmail can read, then the folder to export to.
Another option is to open your Hotmail address book and find an option to import.
Hope this helps http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/cool.gif

bassman http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif those were my first thoughts - at least to be able to create a comma-separated file. I can find no way to access the hotmail address book on the web directly and no way to export/import the address book on the the same site in any way.
I only use hotmail as a "dumping ground" and practically never go to the webmail. But this problem is annoying me http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/mad.gif and for some reason I can synchronize everything except the address book, which I wanted to test to see if it synchronized both ways: (I get the "error 800ccc33", which I can't track down anywhere).
jes I know where you are coming from. Any links I have found seem to indicate that it should synchronize both ways so are you sure it only synchronizes in one direction. Have you tried it after rebooting? I know that some settings (especially any linkage to MSN Messenger - which keeps sticking its nose in where its not wanted) do not always take effect until a reboot. An additional thought is that when adding new contacts on the website; Quickname, Firstname and Lastname are all required fields. So if these are not present in your OE address book perhaps those contacts can't be transferred to Hotmail. Since you have been able to get Hotmail addresses into OE AdBk perhaps you can tell us in what field the Quickname is stored in the OE AdBk, since I can't get mine to synchronize at all. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/frown.gif http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/frown.gif
This is all so typical of M$; even their own applications have difficulty in working together!!! And as for MSNmessenger - its like something that keeps coming out of a conjourer's hat! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

P.S. jes Dont know if you have a website but if so, you could copy your address book and upload it there as a file, which you could access/download from anywhere in the world on your travels.

I have copied the following from a M$ newsgroup:-
"Since about the middle of december the Hotmail server quit synching with the OE address book.
The MVPs on this and some other ngs feel that now the holidays are over the MS support staff will be fixing the problem.
I test it every couple of days. So far no luck. But, prior to that it did work."
So this seems to be a known problem. If and when I know it has been fixed I will post back. Just keep trying in the meantime - I guess. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/rolleyes.gif

The website idea is interesting. If I can't get Hotmail to work, I'll try that.
I emailed Hotmail with this question. They told me that the Hotmail/OE interaction support was still in beta and so may not work all the time.
Also, they said to open OE and Hotmail at the same time to do it.
When I go to "tools" - "synchronize" in OE, it says "there are no offline items to synchronize". How do I add them?

Hi jes. This synching is problematic eh! Hope we are in synch and that what you are now describing is the synching of folders and not of address books.
If you have been working in OE "offline" then there will be something to synch if not then there will be nothing to synch. When you are on-line a bit of synching goes on all the time. Whenever you open a hotmail folder in OE (and are on line) it will synch with the webmail. It will also synchronise when you Send/Receive and if you click on the Synchronise button found when you click on the Hotmail account; the settings determine the off-line synching settings. Of course there is also synching for when you initiate primary changes on the webmail.
Hopefully they will fix the AdBk thing soon. Good Luck neways. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/wink.gif

How do I transfer folders that I have made in Hotmail to my OE?

Folders created in hotmail should automatically be downloaded by synchronizing. Click on the Hotmail Icon in the Folders Toolbar on the left (assuming that Folders is checked in View<>Layout) and then click on the synchronize button in the main window. If folders exist on the website but will not show in OE I would suspect something has become corrupted. So from Tools<>Accounts<>Mail I would remove the Hotmail account and then Add it back as a new account (all you need know is the Hotmail eAddress). When that's done it will (assuming you are on-line) ask you if you wish to download the folders. Good Luck http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/redface.gif

My entries in my "sent" folder in show that the messages were recieced one day earlier than the same entries in Hotmail.

Sounds like you've discovered a time machine!! could make you a fortune. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif
Only thing I can think of is that it's to do with time-zone settings. If the time and date are the same in the message source (source in Hotmail; File<>Properties<>Details in the opened message in OE) then the underlying date/time are identical; but what is displayed is somehow different. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

Somehow I think that it may have to do with Hotmail(in California) being in a different time zone than I am.

Ok. It is working now, but only manualy. I have to tell it to synchronize each time I want it too. I have found how to set the automatic synch of other folders but how do I set it for my address book?

As far as I know the address book has to be sync'd manually. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/frown.gif
