G'day

I'm trying to play Diablo II LOD.
However, when i go to play it, it loads and then this message appears:

"Diablo II Critical Error
Error 22: A critical error has occurred while
intializing DirectDraw."

I think it may be because i don't have a video driver. I'm pretty sure i have the latest version of Direct x (ie Direct X redist End User)

My computer's details, if at all useful to my problems resolution
Hardware: LG computer i think
Processor - AMD Sempron, 2800+, 1.99 GHz, 448MB RAM
System: Microsoft Windows XP, Home Edition, Version 2002

ANDDD if this is useful, i just accessed System through the control panel, went into the Device Manager, selected Video Controller and went to install hardware, but now theres a panel saying that:

"The software you are installing for this hardware (VIA/S3G Unichrome IGP) has not passed windows logo testing to verify its compatibility with Windows XP" and as such that its highly recommended that i don't continue.

Is this a solution?
Should i go ahead?
Is there anything else you need to know?

Basically i just want to play Diablo. I even payed for and downloaded something called 'Driver Genius Professional' in the hopes that this would download a missing video driver that some other program told me i needed. 40 wasted bucks.

Any help would be much appreciated.

IM back!

At a glance, I would say your onboard video is not powerful enough to run Diablo II, but I can't say for sure without knowing your pc's model number. I can look into it more if you can give me that info.

I don't think "powerful" is the problem...I've run LoD on an i810...granted it was not the best running game of Diablo I've ever played, but it successfully ran.

Driver problems...yeah, that's possible.

mjc is correct. Diablo II is a 2D game!! Note the official Blizzard site (http://www.blizzard.com/us/diablo2/) - see the sys req's? See the part where it says 3D acceleration is OPTIONAL!? There is no problem with "power" here at all!

"The software you are installing for this hardware (VIA/S3G Unichrome IGP) has not passed windows logo testing to verify its compatibility with Windows XP" and as such that its highly recommended that i don't continue.Obviously a driver problem. That always shows up when a non-WHQL driver is being installed. The question is, what are you trying to install?...

A Sempron 2800+ at 2GHz is a Socket A CPU. The S3 UniChrome IGP is onboard video from a VIA chipset. Given the combination, you most likely have the VIA KM400 chipset. The place to go for VIA drivers is VIA Arena (www.viaarena.com). For your chipset drivers, grab the Hyperion (http://www.viaarena.com/default.aspx?PageID=420&OSID=1&CatID=1070) set. For your graphics drivers, grab this (http://www.viaarena.com/default.aspx?PageID=420&OSID=1&CatID=1160&SubCatID=102).

And by the way...

I even payed for and downloaded something called 'Driver Genius Professional' in the hopes that this would download a missing video driver that some other program told me i needed. 40 wasted bucks. You should NEVER pay for drivers!! They make hardware work with software at a basic level. The manufacturers who make the hardware WANT you to buy it and use it! Drivers are always free!! Don't pay for them ever again without double-checking here.
