View Full Version : What's With This Swap File?

When I explore my hard drive via Windows Explorer, I now see a huge 204,800KB SWP file listed from earlier this month. It's called Win386.swp. I hadn't noticed this before, has it been here all along? I'm always tight for drive space, so I just wanted to ask if this file is supposed to be here and if it is necessary. I don't know jack about swap files, but I didn't realize they showed themselves, or stored themselves in this way. Help! What's a computer illiterate to do?

As the link probably took you to an explanation of virtual memory; i'll just tell you that you can get rid of it by turning your VM off.
I don't recommend this unless you have about 512 MB's of memory, even then i'd leave it be. Especially since you are using W98/95/ME.
If you really need the space, then reduce your swap file to half your RAM, that way you still have it if the system requires it, and you won't get system crashes ( or at least you'll get less of them due to memory http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/tongue.gif )

If you tried to delete from within windows you would get an error...because win is using it and it won't let delete a file in use.
If you boot up, hit <f8>, and select commonad prompt, and at the prompt type del win386.swp it will delete it. When you reboot into windows and look..it will have returned. This procedure is a good one to follow if you resize it...windows is supposed to resize it for you, but it doesn't always do so...
