View Full Version : Power drop

I have a 240 v ac power supply that finishes at a power pole with meter box etc.
I wish to run a 1.5 mm [15 amp] extension lead to a shed 33 metres distant.
My question is,"Would any power drop over that distance affect the workings of
say an ordinary P4 desktop P.c.and what would be the minimum voltage for efficient
operation of said P.C.".
Thankyou,
wombil.

Here is the formula to calculate the voltage drop

http://www.altronix.com/index.php?pid=4&note=1

You will see a drop over that length wire
Requires heavier wire and a higher starter amperage to get the 15 you want

Thanks Rick,by using the chart in that link and reckoning that 1.5 mm is nearly
14 awg I get a drop of 6.35 volts over 30 metres using 15 awg at the top end of that scale. This leaves me with 233.65 volts at the business end.
The cpu on this P.C. reads input 220 volts so I should have no problems running on this voltage.Would this be correct?
I haven't done a lot of school and the site is 600 kilometres from where I'm sitting now otherwise I would just measure it at the socket.
What I would like to know is the minimum voltage I could use. This is out in the bush a bit.
Thanks mate,
wombil.

I may be messing up the conversion

But in the past I added 1 or 2 awg for each 100 feet

However I have always used 120 not 220/240
If you come up with 233 then you should be good
What I would like to know is the minimum voltage I could use
Best way to get the tolerance for the unit is the power supply rating
at 120 they work with 115 and 220/240 work at 230

Hey Rick,
I have been back to the site and a mate measured the voltage and got 240 volts at the wall socket so no drop at all apparently.
Just thought I would let you know thats all.
Cheers,
wombil.
