Hi, Have you tried to reinstall MSPaint?- Goto Add/Remove Progs in Control Panel and hit the "Windows Setup" Tab, double click "accessories" and remove the tick beside MSPaint, click OK, Click Apply. Then go back into Accessories and put the tick back in, click OK, OK. Should be OK

Tried this. Still same message after powering down and starting up again.

Paint has now risen from the dead but cannot be accessed. (Clicking on Paint produces a message...."C\Progfiles\Accessories\MSPAINT>EXE. A device attached to the system is not functioning.")

boot to "Command Prompt Only" (option 6), by pressing F8 at startup.

at the c prompt type: scanreg_/fix

with the _ representing a sp_ace.

reboot and see if that doesn't fix it.

**this is assuming you are using win9x OS**

Hmm then aparently the Mfc42.dll file is damaged, you'll have to extract it from your windows CD you'll want to go here and get the info you need to extract the compressed files.

ya mean this??

System File Checker Tool
Windows 98 includes a System File Checker tool. You can use this tool to verify the integrity of your operating system files, to restore them if they are damaged, or to extract compressed files from the Windows 98 CD-ROM. NOTE: To use System File Checker to extract a compressed file from the Windows 98, follow these steps:

Click Start, point to Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click System Information.

On the Tools menu, click System File Checker.

Click "Extract one file from installation disk," type the name of the file you want to extract in the "Specify the system file you would like to restore" box, and then click Start.

In the Restore From box, type the path to the Win98 folder on the Windows 98 CD-ROM, type the destination folder in the Save File In box if necessary, and then click OK.

Click OK, click OK, and then click Yes when you are prompted to restart your computer.

NOTE: If you do not specify a source cabinet (.cab) file in the Restore From box, System File Checker first searches for the file you are extracting in the specified folder (outside of a cabinet file). System File Checker then searches all cabinet files, sorted by MS-DOS directory order, in the specified folder. System File Checker extracts the first instance of the file it finds. To determine the order in which System File Checker searches cabinet files, type "dir" (without quotation marks) at a command prompt in the specified folder.

Thanks for replies, Yoda + sea.

Newbie here, your replies a bit too much (at present), thought I might get away with pushing a couple of buttons, will take time to comprehend!!

Any simplified suggestions appreciated in meantime. Thanks again.

Hi,

FIND brings nothing up. I can download MCF42.DLL from Bootdisk website but I'm not certain where to go from there. Where should it be downloaded to?

System folder should contain

Mfc42u.dll
Mfc42enu.dll
Mfc42.dll
Mfc42loc.dll

these from a 'find' request; search string = Mfc42

are none of them there ?

2nd change mfc42.dll to mfc42.old
then d/l mfc42.dll & add to system folder (check results)

file sizes are...,

mfc42u.dll = 973 kb

Found someone on another forum who had same problem..,,
http://www.computing.net/windows95/wwwboard/forum/21575.html

seems that they un-installed & re-installed paint to cure,

-------
another option would be to un-install paint, re-name dll's to .old & then re-install paint

save the files that you d/l into a folder somewhere(eg:desktop)

> = click.

>start>settings>control panel>add/remove programs>windows setup. highlight 'accessories > details>paint (so that 'tick' dissappears)>ok>ok>ok (until back to desktop)

'paint' should now have be removed: have a look in system to see if files are still there, if so change the extensions to .old,

(click)>start>settings>control panel>add/remove programs>windows setup. highlight 'accessories > details>paint (so that 'tick' re-appears)should now be prompted to insert windows CD (do so)>ok>ok>ok (until back to desktop)

paint should now be re-installed (together with .dll files)

NOTE: you may have to do this with the other progs (the ones that don't work) as well

Do you have a antivirus on your computer and if so is it updated?
Have you ran a full system scan?

Just a quick note.

Whenever you get an "DLL" error make sure you work only with the exact file named in the error. In this case MFC42.DLL. (messing with other closly named files will proably not help and could make things worse.)

In any case always rename files your going to replace with an OLD(MFC42.old) extension ,as I belive someone has already pointed out, and then download/replace the file.

The error your getting could also be because the version of "MFC42.DLL" you have is an older version. (which is why you only want to replace the exact file named in the error )Replacing with a newer version might fix it.

Good Luck http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

Just kinda following the post...

Why would you want to rename the file .old?

cause it will be replaced with the "new" one.

http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/wink.gif

therefore it will be the "old" one.

and the "old" one will still be there in case the "new" one doesn't work right.

Have tried uninstalling/installing as detailed in recent post from VIC as illustrated below, but I receive no prompt to insert CD. Would someone explain what should happen in the interval below ?

“> = click.
>start>settings>control panel>add/remove programs>windows setup. highlight 'accessories > details>paint (so that 'tick' dissappears)>ok>ok>ok (until back to desktop)
'paint' should now have be removed: have a look in system to see if files are still there, if so change the extensions to .old,
(click)>start>settings>control panel>add/remove programs>windows setup. highlight 'accessories > details>paint (so that 'tick' re-appears) (………………………………….. ………………….interval……………………………………)>ok>ok>ok (until back to desktop)
paint should now be re-installed (together with .dll files)”

I have run an anti-virus scan, only one virus showed up, ( JS/Kak) which is now locked up in A/V vault.

If a file extension is changed to .old is it then not usable? If it needs to be put back in use Then I guess the original extension needs to be restored. Is this correct ?
