Hi All,
Excuse my ignorance here, but what exactly is Hotmail.
I'm assuming it's some kind of email service.
If so what special about it, and is it any good.
Thanks,
kfh.

I have found that with hotmail there is a tendancy for a lot of spam, mainly porno in nature. On an average day I get between 10-12 of these. I have just signed up (2 days ago) for Eudora web mail - www.eudoramail.com (http://www.eudoramail.com) -
and have not recieved ant spam YET. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/wink.gif

Hi YODA/Ernie,
Thanks for your input. Not too keen on the spam.
Is there any way of blocking it.
kfh.

you can read about a few programs here that say they block spam and there are trial and freeware D/L, But make sure you read everything Carefully and do a google search for other information on Blocking spam and unwanted E-mails.Even though they may be spam deterents does not mean that they are spy-ware free ! Do a lot of research before D/Loading anything.

I have had a Yahoo account for over two years and have never had a single piece of spam. Amazing! Getting this account was the first thing I ever did on the Internet, must have been beginner's luck!

I could say the same thing until recently, I've had a Yahoo account for six years and never received any spam until the email address was posted on the forums, which is necessary so users can contact me in case of trouble or for other reasons. Once a few email address harvesters found it, spam has been my worst nightmare. I have had to deal with over a dozen professional mailing lists, which is still an ongoing battle, and tons of individuals. Many these days seem to be coming from Korea...I get up to 30 spam emails a day sometimes. Almost always at least 10. I sometimes spend up to 3 hours dealing with them.

Stop Unsolicited Mass Email Advertisements (http://www.coyotecom.com/stopjunk.html) has some excellent information.
How to Complain about Spammers (http://spam.abuse.net/howtocomplain.html) is another excellent page.
Anti Junk Mail Tips fpr AOL Users (http://www.coyotecom.com/aoljunk.html) has good info for AOL folks.
UXN Spam combat ( http://combat.uxn.com/) has some excellent lookup tools.
D-Shield (http://www.dshield.org/ipinfo.php?ip=155.251.246.70&Submit=Submit) is a good IP Lookup. The IP lookup results are for a spammer that took me over a month to get rid of. Copy & Paste a different IP into the box and it should work, but is sometimes a bit slow.
Abuse.Net Contact Database (http://www.abuse.net/lookup.phtml) is where to go once you find out the ISP it comes from, this lookup will find out if they have an abuse@ address to send spam complaints to. If not, use the postmaster@ address.

Looking up reliable contact information and then getting them to actually remove you from their mailing list is frustrating and time consuming. Don't expect immediate earth shaking results. It's more like a drop in the bucket than a torrential downpour. Compose a spam complaint in Notepad that is short and concise, and try not to be insulting or abusive, the ISP probably dislikes spam as much as you do, and they deal with complaints all day every day. Make them mad and your complaint goes into file 13. Copy & paste the notepad file into each spam complaint along with the full headers. Some of the links above will help you find and learn to partially interpret headers.

Don't expect great results when attempting to deal with professional mailing lists, the ISPs don't usually do anything about them. They will shut down individual home users for spamming immediately, but the professional lists will keep sending more. They usually have contracts with provisions that the ISP won't terminate the account provided they don't receive a 1 or 2% spam complaint rate. With a mailing list sending up to a million emails a day that can total several million complaints before the ISP will terminate the account.

I have also noticed that virtually all the large professional mailing lists are also using the same national franchised Internet providers, Level3, Concentric (now XO), Sprint, uu.net, Verio, AT&T and Pacbell among others. Most of the rest are from overseas, usually China, Korea and Taiwan.

Pacbell is the ISP one mailing list I am dealing with currently comes from, I called them after getting no results from emailing numerous complaints, they told me just delete it...RIGHT!..sweep it under the rug...hide your head in the sand...NOPE!, not me...I still have seen no results. But pacbell will have to look at my daily spam complaints until they do something about it. I'm not through with phone calls either...

OK I'll stop and get off my soapbox, I could just about write a book about spam after what I've learned in the past 6 months...and most of it leaves me feeling grungy.

when you open a hotmail account (&/or other) be very careful what is in the check boxes eg: 'put in directory', make sure box is unchecked ie; so that you're not put in directory, do a thorough check of everything before clicking ok.

doesn't garantee that you wont get spam, but I opened 2 hotmail accounts on one I checked all the boxes, on the other unchecked them all. One is continual full of spam the other isn't.

having said that I think that once the spammers get onto you it snowballs, so keep them at bay as long as possible and when they do get you, just change your hotmail account. At least it helps to safeguard your 'proper' addy

What Vic is talking about must be what happened with my husband. I have had a Hotmail box for over two years, and never received any spam and only a very few pieces of junk mail. My husband opened a Hotmail box and got porno site stuff..dozens and dozens of nasty emails. He promptly decided he didn't like Hotmail, and I was baffled because had never happened to me.

Having said that, I don't like the "new" Hotmail stuff they implemented about six months ago where you can't directly get to your Inbox anymore..have to look at their ads first. But it is free, and I suppose there is a price for that..and I can go directly from OE to Hotmail and bypass the password stuff. Someone did tell me months ago that Yahoo was better, but I have never gone over to check it out.

Thanks, Pete, for the links. No spam, but got 70 pings on ZA this week in one 2 hour period from the same place. Thinking of trying to report "ping-er" to appropriate authority.

You probably already have this link to one place that has IP info, but I had to ask Pianorak because I didn't have it..so just in case, I found my "ping-er" at DShield.org (http://www.dshield.org/ipinfo.php). FBI, huh? Never thought of that! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif
