CPU Registers TTL [logic}

I am a bit confused on the CPU registers, do the registers hold a certain amount of commands that are to be processed? And when it says registers are 16 bit, for example a 8088 processor has a certain speed and also gives its amount of address bus size. But what is Register Size mean?
