I have just built a pc, when booting for the first time, all the bios is set and correct. The system says please insert system disk. When I do it says system i/o error please insert disk, then the same again. It tries to read the disk for about 5 secs then back to the system i/o error. I have tested the drive and ribbon and they are working OK. Anybody have any ideas?
Go into BIOS and make sure that the floppy type is set correctly (like 1.44MB), check that the cable is properly installed (not backwards ---light always on or misliagned), try a different disk (create a new one on a freshly formatted disk)...

Bios is correct, cable will only go on one way (lugs at either end), the light comes on, reads disk for 5 secs then light goes off and message comes back on, tried 3 system disks all with the same result, ie. i/o disk error please insert system disk.

Hello Nick and welcome,
Is this a new build or rebuild from old parts?
What OS do you plan to use?
Is it "System I/O error" or "I/O disk error"?
What files are on these system disks?

Try a new floppy cable and maybe a different floppy drive.
I'm moving this one to System Troubleshooting where it would be more appropriate.
