Hi.

Sorry if am posting in the wrong section.

So i wanted to ask, what type of warranty do you expect when you buy a computer system be it branded or tailor made?

I am asking this mainly for people who are newbies in the IT world.

12 months seems pretty standard for PCs as a whole but may involve you organising the return after getting an RMA cert.

On site repair and extended warranties can often be purchased in addition to the standard warranty.

Some parts (for example hard drives) may have 5 year warranties offered by the manufacturer of the specific part.

One always has certain statutory rights which will differ from place to place and if you purchase with a credit card you will probably have additional guarantees.

"12 months seems pretty standard for PCs as a whole"............

as a whole do you imply that the warranty also covers software...meaning windows getting crashed, spyware attack, windows mal functioning due client wrong doings........

because here in mauritius clients are given 1 year onsite warranty but not covering software issues.....and life time warranty on labour........also different waranties on the parts like....mobo 2 years, RAM 2 years, lcd 3 years.....

do think thats fair not giving warranty on software??

One can only give general hints. Every country is different. You may have fall back positions with respect to the retailer or to the manufacturer or to the assembler. There are statutory rights and there are the warranties themselves - though just as with insurance, more generally, so often the small print is not read.

Software is a very differnt kettle of fish and one seldom owns software one has a licence to use it. With Windows, as a rule, you agree to the EULA (End User Licence Agreement) when you break the seal on the package or the PC. Only reading the EULA will tell you what the terms are.

Software usually doesn't come with a 'warranty' because it is 'fluid'...there is no uniform set of criteria about software that is going to work universally all the time. Most major software publishers include a certain amount of 'free tech support' in lieu of a warranty. But in most cases, they refer you back to the computer manufacturer for support issues.
