View Full Version : Just a couple of questions regarding ISP

1.) My brother in-law has internet cable access and I have DSL If I configured his network to accept my IP address and DNS numbers, could I access my ISP from his computer via cable access?

2.) If someone else has DSL just from the teleco but no ISP, and I configured their computer with my IP and DSN numbers, could I also access my ISP from their computer?

Reason I’m asking is because I’m not sure how the teleco works with my ISP. I would have to guess that the teleco routes the line from my home directly to my ISP. Or does my ISP work with my teleco?

So if the teleco and my ISP do work together in some manner, that would invalidate questions 1 and 2.
Is this correct?

Any further info on the subject would help me understand how this all works.

Thanks in advance. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

No, because the network you are on is totally different than the network he is on. When you signed up for DSL, you are on a diffent physical network than he is. Only way you could use your ip would if his network offered access to your ISP's network. In that case then they would both actually be part of the same network. Follow me?

How could they have access to a network without an ISP to provide them with a gateway? An isp acts as the server on your internet access; without an ISP to provide you with an IP gateway to the net, you can't get on.

If you wish to access your email from another person't system, you'll have to use a web based utility.

If you want to share internet access then you need to configure internet sharing on your system(s), but you'll still have to be using the saame provider, just that the PC connected to the internet will be a server to the other PC's in your small home network.

The only way you could use another's internet access is if you both had the same ISP-then you could reset that person's account to yours.

here in Baltimore with verizon we have a choice as to which ISP we want to connect our VOL -(verizon online)- it all goes to the telco first they are in complete control, you just advise them who you want your ISP to be.

The common three choices here for example of ISP's to choose from are:

1) GENUITY
2) QWEST
3) AOL

I'm sure there are a bunch of others and as to your area you they (your telco) should have a website that tells you all this kind of information.

And in the case of the person with out a different ISP from the telco the telco is the ISP...

Another thought:
I can go on line on anyone's computer with their ISP, type in AOL.com, then log into my account.
If this person has AOL on their machine, I can log on as a "guest", then put in my account info and be on directly in my account.
I can also setup my account on another machine and do the same thing.

The point I'm making is, you would not need to set up your IP and DNS on their machine, just your account info. You would access the net with their system but your account.
