So I am picking up my new machine tomorrow and have already purchased some extra Ram and am about to buy a good CPU fan. However one thing I am lacking is a power/surge protector. I have a 6 socket stables one but I dont know how well it works.
I was wondering if they are a thing I should definitely get and if so what one I should get.
I would like to keep it below $40 but if it is a important long lasting thing I am willing to pay more once the next pay check comes in.
Thanks in advance
Get an UPS (Uninterruptable Power Supply) that offers power conditioning...about $70 or so. Better overall protection and it gives you time to shutdown properly during a power outage.

I totally agree with MJC. A UPS is one of the most overlooked important components of a computer.
I can't begin to tell you how much cash my company pulls in when storms roll through and the power goes out. And brownouts, and surges, and...
Simply because they won't invest in a decent UPS. ;)

I'll pick one up tomorrow after I get the PC.
Any brand name I should get? Or does any UPS work just the same?

APC is one of the best known quality brands.
Tripplite and Belkin also make serviceable UPSes.
APC are probably the most readily available. That's what I use...the BE550R.
