I am pretty sure my PSU went up tonight. There was a brown out and my computer was on and now it won't do anything. No power up at all. No lights, no fan, nothing. I have the monitor plugged into the same power strip and the monitor lights come on. I have tested the PSU using the paperclip and fan while unplugged from all hardware, and still nothing happens. It wouldn't be anything other than the PSU would it?

I am wondering what a good comparable/useable PSU would be to get for it.

here are my specs:

BIOSTAR I915P-A7C LGA 775 Intel 915P ATX Intel Motherboard , Intel 4 540 3.2G, 1024 ddr-400 ram, Sony 16X DVD-R/+RW DVD Burner D26A, WD Caviar 160 g HD, ATI Radeon X550 Video, 10/100 Fast Ethernet controller (disabled)

*PSU* - ATX 12V Raidmax 420W, #KY 520-ATX

If you had the PSU standing alone, plugged in with the green and black wires shorted together with a clip and it did not power up, I would say it is toasted. But it is not to say that it is the only thing that went bad. You just need to take it one step at a time.

If you can try another known working ATX PSU, you can avoid buying one for nothing if there is something else wrong. But any PSU 430 watts and above, with SATA, should do you fine. Go a bit larger if you plan on adding peripherals.

I repaired one that was on when lightning struck nearby and the power went out. It took out the PSU, the processor and the hard drive. And for some strange reason, it 'eats up' (ruins) memory at random times now, to this day, so something must be amiss with the motherboard as well.

Lightning is an amazingly powerful thing and sometimes it does really bad things..

Thanks! I pulled a PSU out of an old computer (thought I had trashed them all lol) and it was only 350, but just plugged in the HD and MB and it booted and ran fine. Ran it for 5 minutes and shut it down. So it's the PSU for sure. I ended up ordering one yesterday, probably not the best one to get but the priuce was right. It is a Rosewill, and I know there are many mixed reviews on them, but 500w.

Thanks!

Rosewill are usually fine for 'normal' use...that is not in a gaming system.

Yeah, not a gaming system for sure. Just a bunch of HD's :)

Thanks
