Lo All,
I have a pc with xp+sp2 connected to adsl via a D-Link DSL-302G modem.
This modem has 2 outlets, one ethernet and the other usb.The machine I am using now is connected to the ethernet.
What I would like to know is ,"Can I connect another pc in the shed,10 metres
away to the usb port and will both pc's be able to work on the internet this
way"? Seems too easy don't it?
Thanks,
wombil.

No you can't. To get a second PC on your system, you will need a router.

Thanks for the reply Classicsoftware.I found this on the D-Link site;

Modem Description and Operation
The DSL-302G ADSL Ethernet Modem is easy to install and use. You can use the Modem to connect one
computer using its Ethernet interface, and another computer using the USB interface. The Modem can be
managed through either interface. Once the Modem has been set up, the Ethernet port can be used by any
Ethernet enabled computer to connect to the Internet. To use the USB port, a special device driver must be
installed on any computer connecting to the Modem through the USB interface.
Modem Features
The DSL-302G ADSL Ethernet Modem utilizes the latest ADSL enhancements and technologies to provide a
reliable Internet portal suitable for most small to medium sized offices.
• Flexible Connectivity Choose either the USB port or the Fast Ethernet port to connect
• Multiple User Support Both port can be used simultaneously to connect two computers
• Plug and Play USB Installation The USB driver installs automatically
• Bridged Ethernet over ATM Support The DSL-302G supports RFC 1483
• Installation Wizard The easy-to-use configuration utility connects you quickly
• Auto-detect Function The device complies with the most common standards used for ADSL
connection and automatically selects the correct connection type during the initialization process
• MIB Support Built-in MIBs allow SNMP management function.

Could this mean that a router is built
into the modem?
Thanks,
Wombil.

Try it out and get some info.

Add one via NIC and the other via USB (after drivers etc installed).

Open a command prompt and enter
ipconfig /all
and post the output from both PCs here. (Tip: RClick the command box and choose mark then highlight the text you want to copy and hit the enter key. It should now all be on your clipboard ready for pasting).

I know i can use up to 100 metres of ethernet cable but what is the maximum usb cable length?
Thanks,
wombil.

5m times 5 is generally considered tops (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USB#Maximum_Useful_Signalling_Distance).

Repeater cables (http://www.theinquirer.net/en/inquirer/news/2005/03/31/take-your-usb-devices-to-far-away-places) are another approach - but inelegant.

You can get extenders for ethernet of course via wireless or via an electricity supply (http://shopping.yahoo.com/p:NETGEAR%20Wall-Plugged%20Ethernet%20Extender%20Kit%20XE102G%20Bri dge:1993986408:page=details;_ylt=AuFh_oTIbAe.TxjQg MvQ9BPzloUD;_ylu=X3oDMTBiZ2o2Y3ZwBHNlYwNzaWJzcGVj) . The latter are not inexpensive but a doddle to setup and avoid an awful lot of wiring.

If the distant PC only has USB ports then a USB to Ethernet adapter (http://www.misco.ie/productinformation/~94279~/D-Link%20USB%202.0%2010%2F100%20Ethernet%20Adapter.h tm) would be another possible workaround and use the near PCs USB to modem for the second connection.
