Hi All,
I need to download a 35mb sowftware upgrade to get my scanner to work properly. I will need to resume download, as ill get dropped after two hours. Will XP Pro let me do this. I've just downloaded gozilla but read that these type of programmes have spyware. Can the spyware be removed after I've used the programmes, With adaware.
Thanks,
kfh.

Hey KFH,
Yes Gozilla is spyware, yes it can be removed, I'm not sure if adaware will do it.
There are other download managers out there. I don't use them myself, so I don't have a name for you at the moment http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/frown.gif Some of the others will soon.

I gotta ask, why will you get dropped after 2 hours? If it's because of a "Limited Usage Service", I will make this suggestion (and I know someones gonna scream about this) Install AOL 6.0, take advantage of the free trial period, download that 35Mb file, cancel your AOL account, uninstall AOL (it really will uninstall http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/wink.gif ) and then, just to make yourself feel real good, restore a previous version of your registry.

Good luck http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/cool.gif

With Opera (http://www.opera.com), I can almost always resume an interupted download (it's an integrated feature), and downloads are usually significantly faster than with IE (up to about 25% faster).

A download accelerator recommended awhile back as having no spyware is DAP (http://www.speedbit.com/#)...although I seem to remember that you're supposed to be careful NOT to install something when installing the DAP..might have been Gozilla. My husband used DAP for months without problems, and it was nice to be able to resume easily. Read somewhere recently that if you do not "close" your download window or browser, that you can resume by just reconnecting..but don't know if that works.

Which ISP are you using? Reason I ask is because I know there are several places where "time" is mentioned in DUN settings, but mine are all grayed out now since I was too lazy to work out all the bugs of getting a DUN connection set up in mine..and am still using the AT&T connection gizmo (having turned off/prevented the spyware portion in ZA).

Hi All,
Will I have to remove IE6 to run Opera.
My connection got dropped after 2 hours on my old ISP, thats the conditions, but you can reconnected right away which is a pain.
My current ISP is British Telecom, Old one was Freeserve.
I've got a 56k modem on a Dun connection,Download speeds start at about 8kb/sec then drops to about 3kb/sec in about 10 seconds. So to download that file will probally take 5/6 hours 'Ouch'.
thanks,
kfh.

You don't have to remove IE to use Opera, just install it and use it...

You won't have to uninstall IE to use Opera. I think the reason the speed appears to drop off so suddenly is because the download starts while you're navigating to and/or creating a folder to put it in, but the speed listed is an average and the timer starts after you've chosen all that and a few KB have already been received. Search google for ispeed - it's a good DUN tweaking tool. There's shareware versions still updated every now and then, I think, and there's an older version, 2.7-something, that's still pretty good and it's freeware.

here is a downloader that is NOT spyware and has NO ADVERTS.
No restrictions and is easy to set up (took me about 5 minutes) Hardest part is directing it to you AV software to scan all files after download. (the time above includes that) http://www.stardownloader.com/ http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/wink.gif

Hi kfh,

I use Download Accelerator Plus. LINK (http://download.cnet.com/downloads/0-3282264-108-54862.html?tag=upd) It works pretty good. It has a resume feature. It increased my download speed from 2-3kbps to 5-6kbps over a 56k connection. It's free. I haven't heard about any spyware associated with it. Ad-Aware dosen't have a problem with it. Might be worth a try. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

Hi All,
Thanks for all the input.
I've downloaded Opera but it dose'nt run on XP Pro.
When I try to install it, it says it's not a valid win32 app.

Just installed Opera v6.01 onto Xp Pro with no problems (v6.00 worked as well - have you installed an earlier version?) Is " not a valid win32 app" possibly a corrupted file?

Thanks,
kfh.

Thanks, ErnieK, for the link. We never noticed any real increase in download speed with DAP, but with our slow dial up, we needed the resume feature. But wouldn't mind at all NOT looking at ads. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

Stardownloader plain simple and fast 4.8/5.5 kb/sec, Have'nt seen downloads that quick on my system before.
Thanks,
kfh.

You are welcome. I will send my bill to you on a six monthly basis http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

I know it is not relevant to this topic but here is another link that lets you automatically load your various software(s) (AV Firewall etc.) when you connect to the web, saves you having them running all the time. I have not managed to figure it out yet, but comes recommended by Fred Langa ( www.langa.com (http://www.langa.com) ) and he only recommends good stuff (IMHO) http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/wink.gif

Even tho i'm on broadband i've found that a download manger works best; and i use DAP-no spyware assoiciated with it.

Can't say i've really paid any attention to the ads, however i just removed the " Ads " folder and the key in the registry that pointed to it; this stopped the download of the ads. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif
