I am looking to buy a new laptop
Number ONE requirement
NO TOUCHPAD

Finding one is getting to be a real pain

Anyone know of a manufacturer that still makes a laptop without that POS installed

Any reason you do not want a touchpad? You might misplace your mouse while doing a multimillion dollar deal M&A presentation...it happens :)

Do you prefer eraserheads or an actual mouse?

Gawk...takes a lot of finger dexterity to master one of those.

IBM/Lenovo has the pointing "eraser type" device.

Fujitsu has some with a little hanging trackball device.

Also remember on many laptops you can disable/enable the touchpad simply by typing Fn+7 to toggle it off/on.

Thanks for the manufacturers names.
I need to go back to them and dig a little more..

Why don't I want a touch pad?
Easy one to answer.
I don't like them and I don't use them.

They end up messing up when you can't afford it
They can block and delete almost anything when in a document and you don't know it till it's too later

Read a document and type from it
Then you look up and half of it is gone :(

Keyboard commands work just as well even better than most touch pads

BTW..
Fn+7 doesn't work on all models.
Example this Toshiba I am working on at this very moment

Thanks again
I'm off to visit Lenovo

Anyway, with the release of the X201, it looks like Lenovo has quit the no touchpad business. That's fine... I always preferred Fujitsu's anyway.

Rick I totally agree with you on touchpads. It doesn't matter if there is no equivalent of Fn+7, you can still disable the touchpad by removing the drivers!
I have done that on my laptop and now use a Logitech wireless mouse.

I disable the touch pad on my wifes laptop when she has a regular mouse plugged in using the drivers options. When it is booting it works until the drivers load then nothing. Or if you remove the mouse it will work again. That is good in case the mouse stops working the touch pad will work. She is not going to use KB shortcuts. :p

If you really want to you can take off the palm rest and simply unplug the touch pad ribbon cable. ;) Removing the palm rest is usually pretty easy on most laptops. Actually now that I think about on some models you may only have to remove the KB to get to where the cable plugs in to remove it. It varies.

Nice to know about removing drivers but you two are replying to a 2 year old thread. Rick, sadly, hasn't been around for a long time. :(
