View Full Version : cookies
In the Internet Options in IE6 there is a button in the general tab to remove cookies.
If you have gone to c/net a few times and download things, the next time you try to download there you are asked to fill out a form first. It just asks your name and address and so forth. If I click on the previously mentioned button in IE6 the cookies are all deleted and that form at c/net doesn't show up.
There is a folder c:\windows\cookies that contains, guess what? Yes, cookies. I delete them all except index.dat and that form still appears when I go to download at c/net. Where else are the cookies kept?

I don't know much about downloading from c|net these days, I haven't been there in ages. They had no form of that type the last time I downloaded anything there though.
The reason the form shows up is their cookie has been deleted. If the cookie is still there, the site "knows you" already and doesn't need you to fill out the form. If the cookie is not there then you see the form.
Records of all the websites you have visited are kept in a couple of places, the index.dat file you didn't delete is one of them. You can't delete it either, unless you know your way around in DOS. From what I've read it seems some are also kept in the registry, but I haven't checked into that yet. The index.dat file is a log of every website you have visited since Windows was originally installed. It can be deleted, but not without a bit of trouble. Depending on your IE settings a number of websites are also kept in the History folder, which by default is set to 20 days.
If you want to avoid having to fill out the form you mention every time, you can visit the site then copy the cookie placed on your computer and save it in a separate folder, then any time you delete all your cookies you can copy & paste it from that text file back into the Temporary Internet Files folder.

I'm not sure that you are understanding what I am saying.
My computer is usually full of cookies. I know that they are because site know my name when I go to them and such. When I go to cnet and try to download, I get a form to fill out. It asks my name and address and email addess, the usuall drill.
I have IE6 and so it allows me to delete the cookies, so I do. Then I go back to cnet and the form doesn't show up untill I have gone there and downloaded about three times.
I know how to get rid of that. I just tell IE6 to delete the cookies again.
My problem is that there are some cookies that I want to keep so I don't have to keep typing in my username at some sites. With the cookie for monster.ca I don't have to put in a username or a password. It just knows the computer I use.
That said, I want to isolate the cnet cookie from the ebay,monster,paypal...cookies so that I can delete it and not have to loose the advantages of the others.

jes: Just do what Pete said to do...save the Cookies you want elsewhere, and then after deleting all your cookies, stick them back. I am doing that this morning..deleted all my cookies and have gone to the places where I do not want to reenter passwords every time..and in a few minutes will be saving those cookies. There are cookie management programs out there too..I just don't want to install anything to my puter now.
A freeware cookie manager I saved the link to months ago is here (http://home.nordnet.fr/~pmdevigne/)
Back to my original question in my first post. Where are these cookies kept? You say that I can save them and put them back. Where do I save them from? That c:\windows\cookies folder?

you didn't say what version of windows you're using; if it's an NT based one ( like 2k or XP ) then you need to look in {root}:documents and settings\{ your name }\cookies, this is part of your profile in the NT enviroment.
I use a freeware program called Cookiemanager (http://home.nordnet.fr/~pmdevigne/) you just enable it, and tell it which cookies you wish to keep, and which you wish to delete. There after you just run it when you are through surfing and it will take care of saving the cookies you want, and deleting any you don't.

Another free cookie manager is CookieWall from AnalogX (http://www.analogx.com/contents/download/network.htm).
You can also export and import cookies (and favorites) from the File Menu in IE; (5.5 for sure; other versions don't know).
With InternetCleanUp 2.0 (http://www.ontrack.com/internetcleanup/) you can select which cookies to keep as "protected" and then delete all the remaining ones at the touch of a button.

Okay, let's just suppose you're a fussy old lady who doesn't want to install any new software to her puter until her "new" puter gets up and running. Let's further suppose that in a frenzy the other morning, you have gone to Windows Explorer, Windows, Cookies folder..and deleted all your cookies. Then after re-entering passwords, you go to save those cookies..and your 98 puter keeps saying it can't copy cookies cuz in unknown format, and it can't Import cookies, and yesterday when trying to go through Temp Internet folder..says doesn't recognize cookies. And lastly, Sea , was a bit hesitant to "Move folder". I am assuming from mjc's comment that I was supposed to go there and "copy" files?...but that's when I got the "don't recognize file format" message. I am having trouble here at PC..have to at least start my user name when posting before able to do so. Can you explain, in baby words, for me how to save cookies I want, please? Feeling stupid and a bit frustrated this morning.

in IE go to tools>> internet options>> Security TAB.
click "default level", reboot and see if you're ok.
then go and try a cookie manager if you want to, or you can try different settings to see what's best for you.
you will find "advanced settings" in - "Custom Level".

With respect to Exporting/Importing cookies from IE. The format is different from a single cookie (as might be copied from the TempIntFiles). It is a single text file with each cookie in the list entered as a new line using comma-separated-values.
Although one could (laboriously) manually create such a text file, it is easiest to use the FileMenu item "export cookies" so that the correct format is made in the first place; then give it a name and location that will be meaningful. Trying to import a "normal" cookie will give the incorrect format error message.
In short: Only import what you have already exported.
I too, like Kay, have now to enter LoginName and Password once; wonder if this has to do with the ZA upgrade - but haven't checked its settings out properly yet.

Well, truthfully, I am really sorry I deleted cookies because having to reenter stuff is annoying. Only because I usually start a post, click up on Favorites, go check and see if page I want is still working, right click, copy addy, go back to PC post page, insert link, finish post, click Submit, and NOW getting "you haven't entered all the required fields". Go back and look, and the name and password I put in is gone. Only happens once..all subsequent posts work fine. I didn't upgrade my ZA, so that's not my problem. (And nevermind..I can hear that!..on what my problem might be..lol)
Paul: Please go to this thread (http://www.pcguide.com/ubb/Forum9/HTML/001998.html) and explain how you got that pic to "be" a jpeg file here on the board. Thanks.

Kay. I have done as you requested. BTW, I have also got my login cookies back. I think you must have both cookies and scripting enabled for it to work. Then went to preferences and first deleted all PCGuide cookies from there and then chose the options I wanted and clicked on submit. Then went to a testing forum and posted a new post. After that all was back to normal. Perhaps some of those steps were not necessary but I did them all anyways. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

Thanks. I will check on my Preferences here and see if that fixes my problem before I get "used to it" and don't fix it at all..lol. I will be using a cookie manager program on my newer, stronger, "able to leap taller buildings" puter...cuz this stuff is just another housekeeping chore I would rather skip, if possible.
