View Full Version : Very slow internet downloads
I have two computers hooked up to DSL via D-Link and up until a month ago everything was fine. Then the internet connection started lagging so I got a new modem from the cable company and they also put a new line filter at the pole. Pings to websites that I visit are usually good 25-65s average. Web pages load up fairly quickly but the problem is downloading any video or programs from these sites takes a very long time. For example www.drummerworld.com, drummer videos used to load in seconds and now take 30min. I tried reloading Quicktime, a 14mb load that took 15min, tried reloading IE 7 a 22mb file that took 25min! I also tried the malware link in this thread and it found one item that it took care of but it didn't help. This is also happening on both computers. Suggestions will be very much appreciated
before I shoot both machines, lol.
Don't shoot your machines till you check the cable/dsl line or ISP server
A few companies have in the past limited download speeds to prevent bandwidth hogs from taking control
You should look around and see if your provider is among the companies that set limits on bandwidth usage
You can check your own hardware by transferring files between them from one shared folder to another
That should tell you if your problem is in the router ..
Thankyou, I will try that tonight.
Ok at the risk of sounding stupid, how do I transfer files from one machine to another?
You need to enable file sharing on both systems
Then while connected to the router
Browse your network
Open the shared folder on each system on one screen
Then drag and drop a file from on to the other
Thanks, I'll give it a try.
The files transfered with no problem.
Then the slow down is outside your system / network and needs to be addressed by the isp or the server you are getting the files from
As it turns out, I had gotten a new modem from the cable company after trading in my 10yr old one. I finally called the cable company to come and check things out and they found the new modem to be bad...said they'd never seen one that slow!!!! Can't trust anything I guess;) Thanks for the imput.
