I just installed a cd writer on my system. I set the jumpers and everything correctly, and configured it so that the cd writer would be a slave on the primary ide controller along with my HD. Anyways, when I put in the ide cables, I put the cd writer on the end, and the HD on the middle. My comp did not pick up the HD at all. It was only when I shifted it so that my HD was on the end of the cable and the cd writer was in the middle did everything work. Why does this happen?

Oh, and right now I've got all the ide cables used. I've got my primary HD and my burner on one, and a removable HD and a dvd rom on the other. All this is powered by a 300W ps. Is all this safe for my pc's mobo, ps, etc? Thanks.

The end connector is for the master device the middle is for the slave device. With what you have a 300W power supply should be fine.
