Hello everyone. I stumbled upon this forum when I was looking for a solution to my problem on google. I couldn't get a clear solution to my problem, so I'm posting here.

My system specs are P4 2.8GHz, 512MB DDR333 RAM, 80GB SATA Seagate HDD, Intel 915GAG MB. I run Win XP SP2.

I have AVG 7.5 Antivirus installed. Its scheduled to run the virus scan daily at 8 am. So yesterday, there was a power cut and my UPS probably didn't work and my computer shut down at exactly 8.13 am. But after the power came back, I switched on my comp and the system was so slow at startup. It has never been this slow before. I opened Speedfan and the processor temperature went to 88 C. I was shocked. My maximum temperature has only been around 65 C and that too only when i play games or do some processor heavy tasks. So I was afraid and I shut down my computer. I switched it on 2 times again with a gap of 3 hours each. The same temperature and Speedfan showed CPU utilization to be more than 60% and it didnt come down. I couldn't come to any conclusion and I shut down again. The next time I noticed my PSU fan was not working at all. So I thought maybe if I replaced it, the temperature would come to normal. But I also didn't know when the PSU fan stopped working. It may have stopped working even before this problem occurred.

So today, I again switched on and checked the Task Manager and found that "avgcc.exe" was utilizing 60% of CPU and i ended that process. AVG loads at startup each time. After ending that process, the temperature began to decrease, and it stayed around the 64 C range. But before this happened, the temperature it idle condition used to be only in the 56 C range.

So can you please help me out? Any suggestions to cool my CPU even more effectively? Also why did AVG utilize so much CPU? It has never done that before. I also uninstalled AVG. Should I go for another antivirus or get AVG 8.0?

Thanks in advance for all your help.
