I have a dell inspiron 530S. I downloaded the avg update and rebooted my pc and I got this screen. I cannot start in safe mode. I can't do anything. I've tried several times. Did I lose everything on my hard drive? If not, what do I do to fix it. If I did, I guess I will just have to reload Win XP.

Here's the blue screen of death.

Have you tried "Last Known Good ..." from the F8 bootup options?

Is data recovery the most important thing or is getting the system going again the priority.

If the latter then try chkdsk /r from the recovery console followed by a repair installation (http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm).

If the former you should simply slave the drive into another PC and backup your important data before doing anything else. Chkdsk /r can repair a corrupt file system but can make data unrecoverable too.

I'd like to try to save my data, if possible. Yes, I did try to boot from "last known good" and when I did that, I got a whole bunch of what looked like file names flood the screen and I couldn't get it to do anything....so I rebooted. What causes this blue screen? I'm not good at this kind of computer stuff.
