Having just got over a format and reinstall of Windows XP Home, and adding RAM I find that I need to install Updates up the Yingyang.

I have a speedier computer now but I'm sure it will get slower each time I install another program.

My Question: Do I really need Java?

I have just installed it but I'm tempted to uninstall it.

I'm guessing that I will get replies indicating that it is my decision but I'll pose the question anyhow.

Thanks.

Like most things with computers, "it depends".
Java RE allows you to do things on websites and make things happen with peripheral devices.
The smart thing is to load the latest version available for your OS and keep it updated on a regular basis, like any other software. Unlike some software you do want to remove old versions.
Java 6 Update 7 is the latest release.
