I am trying to go online with an old Dell Latitude laptop running Windows ME using a modem card. The modem card is configured correctly, as is the dial-up connection to my ISP. I can connect normally using a desktop or another laptop so I know I'm using the correct user ID and password. When I log on (or attempt to) I get the following message on screen:

The Microsoft Dial-Up Adapter is not configured to work with the current network configuration. Please check your server type and the network configuration in the Control Panel then try the connection again.

I looked in the Control Panel and everything looks normal. I'm not sure how to begin troubleshooting this one. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Under the connection in IE or network
Make sure it is set to use dial up and that the LAN option is blank

Make sure all the needed protocols are installed under network for the phone/modem

Well, I checked the settings and now I am able to get to the "verifying username and password" box, and a connection to my ISP is made. Then a box pops with:

The computer you're dialing in to cannot establish a dial-up networking connection. Your server type might be incorrect. To fix this problem, contact your internet service provider or network administrator.

So under this dial-up connection I look at Properties>Networking>Type of dial-up server and PPP: Internet, Windows 2000, NT, Windows ME is selected. So apparently the correct server is selected which makes me wonder why I am getting the (new) error message.
