A friend of mine came to me to block a website (he has OCD and kind of is addicted to the site, to prevent him from wasting time at the site he wanted it blocked.) I didn't think it would be a problem. I installed a program which magically vannished, and then I ended up installing Koffix (http://koffix.com/). (I didn't see the missing program in add remove programs, or in Hijackthis for the first program...)

I got this error in Koffix

Encountered problems
Koffix Blocker encountered problems during the modification phase. Please visit Koffix Blocker's web page for troubleshooting and additional information . The following displays the error message for each of the encountered problems. These error messages are also saved in the log file mentioned above.

0. An error occurred when trying to open the file for writing. Filename: 'C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\HOSTS'.
Current working directory: 'C:\Program Files\Koffix Blocker\'. System error message: Access is denied. C++
exception: 'ios_base::failbit set'.

and I got a similar error in Hijack this. I don't know what the problem is, I'll post a hijackthis log anyways.

Any idea what the error is? or how to fix it?

Does Norton360 protect the HOSTS file?

About the only thing that was clear from the error was that the HOSTS file was write protected...if Norton isn't doing it there are a number of malware infections that can...so check the Norton options or disconnect from the internet, disable it and try again.

sounds like a plan. I had him run the online Panda Virus Scanner over night. When I go over today, I'll check.

Panda only found a couple of cookies which I am not concerned about at the moment. I am either not quite sure how to disable Nortan 360, or it doesn't change a thing. I tried right clicking and found a "disable firewall" and a "disable auto protect" options which I have tried clicking on. and tried again, it still has a problem. I also tried to force permission by hunting down the guilty Hosts file and forcing write protection, only to find that it has permission.

any ideas?

Unless there are errant entries in the hosts file you dont need to concern yourelf with it's content.

There's no real need to use the program which is designed to block loads of baddies. Just edit the hosts file yourself (just add the line 127.0.0.1 websiteaddresstoblock.com to it) or add the one site that needs to be blocked to the restricted sites zone.

Some firewalls can also block individual sites or domains.

Well, in I.E. adding the one site to the restricted domains doesn't work. That being said, it still has yet to be restarted since I started tinkering with his computer. I'll try modifying it manually, but I am concerned since Koffix couldn't modify it, and the site desired to block and is on the restricted site list is still not blocked.

IE's restricted zone doesn't actually block the site...it just prevents it from running any scripts, ActiveX, Java, etc...

awaj
09-15-2008, 10:59 AM
so, modifying the Hosts file is the only way to easily block the site?

mjc
09-15-2008, 11:36 AM
Or with a firewall or some routers allow you to block sites...or some kind of 'net nanny' program.

awaj
09-15-2008, 03:29 PM
that's what Koffix was for, but that isn't working as well as I thought it would...

IE's restricted zone doesn't actually block the site...it just prevents itCorrect of course - I'm slipping - but then how often do I use IE.

mjc

Hosts will block it...

Have you tried manually editing the Hosts file yet?

The format to use is:

127.0.0.0 some nasty site

Make sure you save it without any extension...it would be best in Folder Options (I believe), in Explorer to make sure the 'show extensions...' setting is ticked so that it will show all extensions.

awaj
09-15-2008, 08:51 PM
no I haven't, when I do mod the file, I will just click save and exit. that should leave it as what ever it was in the first place. it will probably get done sometime towards this week.

My friend also asked about blocking searches via search engines like google. (not entirely, just certain words) any ideas if that is do-able?

mjc
09-15-2008, 09:12 PM
No, it doesn't have an extension at all, so notepad will want to save it with the default .txt extension.

I've always used 127.0.0.1 (http://compnetworking.about.com/b/2007/02/28/127001-ip-loopback-address.htm) as the loopback address but possibly any 127.x.x.x would be effective.
