I have an old HD I want to insert into my new PC.
I was told there should be a switch/s to set for the slave....

I have the HD out and don't see any ?

Any idea on what to do ?

This is circa 1998, Maxtor mod. 91350d8

Some specs on the new PC...

The old drive is an IDE drive, so you will need an open IDE spot in the new machine.

What exactly do you want to do with the old drive?

MAXTOR 91350D8 13.5GB 5400RPM ATA-33 3.5IN 3H IDE (http://www.4drives.com/4drives/91350D8.htm).

The first thing I want it for is to copy files to the new machine, after that I just thought it would be good for extra storage.

My 1st assumption was that there would be switches, similar to those you see on a lot of electrical equipment (those little toggle switches).

But I see these are actual pins that need to be jumped....

p.s.
I'm not sure I saw my model listed in the 1st reply with the examples

It's old and slow...installing it on an IDE channel, inside your machine is probably a waste of a spot...unless you have no other IDE devices.

You be better off, in the long run, getting an external enclosure...http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=2010090092%201053807123%201054107130&bop=And&Order=PRICE

I have no other IDE devices.... that I know of.

The link provided had many products.... which one would be a good
choice.
I'm assuming these things allow me to adapt the HD in question to
my PC ? Correct ?

An external enclosure will allow you to use the drive as a 'portable' device...on any PC that has a USB port.

I lean towards the ones in the $20 range...they usually have enough features, are sturdy enough and cheap enough for general use.

This one has a cooling fan, a feature usually found on higher priced models.

OK I'll consider the external, although for the most part I just want to copy the files over from the HD and then just get rid of it (but I figured since it was there I might as well use it for an extra directory and storage).

So if I can get that to work by installing I can save the $25.....

So back to my original question, any idea on what to do to make this a slave ?
