Do the surge of questions asking about video cards, I thought I would put together a couple of links to help forum members.
One of the major hardware review web sites right now is Tom's Hardware Guide www.tomshardware.com.
Every month THG release their list of best buys for video cards in different price ranges. This is the first place to look for ideas for upgrading/building. Septembers list can be found here (http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/Best-Graphics-Card,2011.html). This is a very non-biased comparison based on price/performance of many different video cards. Most of us "hardware guys" here use this as a reference for advice.
A second invaluable link is their quarterly benchmark listing of many different cards running different games. (This includes Crossfire and SLI setups.) This quarters chart can be found here (http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/charts/gaming-graphics-charts-q3-2008/benchmarks,30.html). If you have a specific game that you want to play, then go here to find out what works best! You can also check the THG "best buys" on this chart.
I hope that these two links can provide a little clarity into the ever changing world of video cards. I will try to re-post the new link every month for the "best buys" as well as update quarterly the link to the benchmark results.

i say make this a sticky that someone updates the links for bi-monthly...
That's the whole plan behind this one...

It depends upon what application/game you are running. If you want a suggestion for your system, please start your own thread.

I thought, you may find THIS (www.lowfps.com/review-database) review database helpful. It is a database with links to online reviews, so that you can see all products listed together and you do not have to search for individual reviews. There are some useful articles on that site, too...

Wow, talk about an unused thread.
I hope nobody minds if I try to pick this back up myself. I'll start by posting this month's, albeit a tad too close to Christmas to make a good wish:
December '11 (http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/fastest-graphics-card-radeon-geforce,3085.html)
Hopefully I'm not jumping into a bucket-sized hornet's nest.
Wow, I thought this thread had died.
Picking up this month's list, great way to revive it. Go for it...it's all yours.

Thanks, will do my best. It's pretty dead, but considering it's a sticky, I figured it might as well be updated.

Wow, this is the first time I've remembered something without an alarm clock. And look at that, only two days off, which is fine since two days ago I had no internet access.
Other than that, not much change in the list of cards, except for the new 7k series of Radeon. However, the 6k are still holding their own category for category, from what I saw browsing through. I think I might upgrade my ram this month....
