the q6600 is much faster than the Pentium D @3.0Ghz look here http://www.tomshardware.com/charts/cpu-charts-2008/3DMark06-CPU,370.html

The only comparison I can think of would be the PD is two soup cans connected by a string like little kids do, and a Core2 is like a 10Gb fiber connection. :p

There are loads of technical details involved...

Core2Duos (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Core2Duo) have a smaller die size (meaning that the physical distance between the transistors that make up the CPU is smaller), larger cache, require less power...they can do more with 'less' than a similarly spec'd Pentium D (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pentium_d).

Also Pentium Ds are 'old' tech...and are officially 'dead'...Intel shipped the last of them last month.

Also, when looking at comparing them you can't get away with not looking at the underlying technology...Netburst (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NetBurst) versus Core (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Core_microarchitecture).

*The wikipedia articles just barely get their feet wet...
