I am helping Andyswork1 with a self-help website. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what the common user would like to see on such a help site? What are the most common topics that you in your work are asked to explain. Please pass these on. Might choose to add them to the site. I know about the stuff thats on here. Just wondering if anyone has any other suggestions.

I would say a section on Dos commands and some good reg hacks would be warrented. And some different operating system Info & trouble shooting,Not everyone uses M$ products.

How about a section explaining the different mutitude of utilities and how the same functions can be done with the software already installed on your computer.
Disk Defrafmenters that knock a whopping 2-5 minutes off a half hour process.
File management programs that put their own labels on things when you should learn to name your folders and files as you want.
Disk cleanup programs when you should learn what is OK to delete and then run a defrag.
File downloading programs when your browser is already setup to download.
There are many others out there, all of which take up space and resources. I don't like the idea of using a tool that is contradictory to it's very existance. I mean, what did you use to download that downloading program??
I have been on my soapbox about this one lately, but it is only because of the headaches I have seen with them.

hehe bassman- you can "get on your soapbox" anytime, you tend to make sense- some people though have found little programs that they just like.
always good to remind people that there were ways to do it prior to found apps.
like winME defrag- love that!

Any self-help site on computers is bound to be a work in constant progress http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/wink.gif, but if you want some more pointers...
How about an explanation on hard drive capacity vs. storage capacity (why does my 60GB HD only have 56GB on it?).
An explanation on how to properly uninstall programs? "Use uninstaller or Add/Delete programs, never manually delete the folders or it will stay in the registry forever!"
BSOD is not fatal to the user, and "illegal operations" will not land you in jail.
A bigger monitor is the best investment most user can make.
A primer on system requirements (to help those newly enlightened souls who have finally converted from console gaming to PC gaming http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/wink.gif ).
Along with what Yoda74 said, offer instructions for both IE and Netscape, maybe even a little AOL.
A warning about Demos and Betas, and how they can truly mess up your system if you don't keep track of them.
How about a section on upgrading, like here? You could do a short showcase on newly released hardware/software products that newbies could get into. This of course would include Windows and AV updates, a heads-up with links for those who might forget or not know where to go.
Did I mention everyone who surfs the net should have Anti-Virus software?
That's all for now.
