My Onboard USB ports seem to have gone haywire.

About a week ago, when I plugged my camera into the end of my USB cord, my tower spontaneously rebooted.

When the desktop came back up, the resolution was all f-ed up. I changed the resolution settings back, and tried plugging it in again. Same problem, except the resolution stayed stable the next time I rebooted.

Fearing that If I kept doing stuff like this with the OS loaded, it would damage the software, i put in my Windows XP setup disk, let it load to the setup screen, and plugged my camera in. It stayed on. I rebooted, and loaded the desktop, plugged my camera in again, and it stayed on. However, i got a message from Windows XP Saying that a USB device was malfunctioning.

Anyone got a clue what happened?

Here are my computer stats:

My PC: Dell Optiplex GX 100 | CPU: Intel Celeron Processor 700 MHZ Socket 370. | Video: Onboard | Monitor: Dell M781p 16" CRT | Motherboard: Optiplex GX100 | Memory: 512 MB SDRAM | Hard Drives: Maxtor 31024H1 [Hard drive] (10.25 GB) IDE ATA,
Segate ST3160812A [Hard drive] (160.04 GB) (Boot disk), Segate ST34323A [Hard drive] (4.31 GB). | CD/DVD Burner: Pioneer DVR-710 DVR-RW | OS: Windows XP Pro. | Pci cards: Usb 2.0, Creative Sound Card, Wireless NIC.

Note that this does not involve my USB 2.0 PCI Card, but the usb ports that are actually soldered to the motherboard.

I should mention that this computer is ANCIENT by today's standards. at least 8 years old, maybe more.

Just a quick suggestion:
Go to Device Manager, right click and 'remove' the usb components, reboot to let Windows reinstall the drivers and see if your problem gets corrected.

Also try changing the CMOS battery, in a machine that old it is probably dead /dying anyway.

Uh, it's fixed.

I went into CMOS setup, turned the USB controller off, booted to windows, and it was still doing the same thing. I shut down, restarted, went back into CMOS setup, turned the USB controller back on, booted to windows, and it's back to normal. my USB ports work again.
