"what did i do wrong"
If you give a detailed list of the steps you completed, we might spot an error in your method.

e.g. Did you burn the ISO as a file [wrong] or as an image [correct]?
If you use the FREE ImgBurn (http://www.imgburn.com/) disk-burning prog to do the job, it automatically burns it as an image when it detects that you have chosen an ".img" file.

Did the build program find the WinXP files OK?

1. Dariks Boot and Nuke (DBAN) (http://www.snapfiles.com/get/dban.html) is a program [run from a bootable CD or floppy disk] that writes patterns of 1's & 0's to the internal HDD of a PC, so you cannot have used that as a disk burning program.

2. Plus you haven't given any details of the steps you took in making the UBCD4Win bootable CD, so how can we begin to even guess where you might have gone wrong? :(

3. "it said an instance of windows is being upgraded...to cancel this installation and install a fresh version press enter"
Sounds like you had booted a Windows installation disk that was more up-to-date than the version of Windows on the HDD.
