I was reading and doing alot homework on routers due to the fact i have a PlayStation 3 in my basement and constantly loose connectivity while playing online. I learned that due to interference and my routers location are the main problems i have so i began to search for alternatives. Hard wiring was one option but unless i create a category 5 cable its gonna be difficult to wire it too my basement. Adding another modem too my household according to sbc yahoo is out of the question due to limit of 1 per phone line. and moving it is out of the question due to it having to be hard wired to the main pc in the household( mothers rule lol). so i came across the idea of using different firmware to change the factory boost of my Linksys WRT54G version 6 router. and also add a new antenna from standard too high gain and i was wondering 1. is this a good idea and if so what are the pro's and con's 2. how is it done. also if anyone else has any ideas to max out connectivity to my PlayStation 3 i am all eyes

also what about wireless repeaters?

Thanks for any input in advance and Much Much appreciation to all that answered me before and special thanks to MJC :)

The one thing to think about, other than the fact that it violates FCC rules to boost the power beyond the limit the FCC has set, is that you are going to increase the effective range of the device enough that neighbors that previously couldn't receive your signal now will.

You will need to have the security enabled...otherwise you'll probably pick up a number of 'hitchhikers'.

Try the antenna first...if that gives enough boost, don't worry about upping the power with the firmware...but you may still want the firmware for the control features. If the antenna isn't enough...'pump up the volume'.

There is a little loophole in the FCC regs that sort of allows for this kind of activity...you are just running an experimental device and it isn't for sale.
