I've three psu units spare. I usually use a old AT power supply with my anti-static wristband. The question is this the other two when plugged in dont seem to work as the fan just stays still, the fan comes on with the old at psu, what could be the reason, I know one of them works, so why does the fans not come on.
I even done a "out-of case test" MB, RAM, CPU and attached the psu, nothing, no beeps nothing.
Am i missing something here???
Im no expert, but when a psu is got power going through it, the fan should work shouldn't it?

Let me see if I have this right. You have three power supplies.
One supplies power and the fan works. One supplies power but the fan does not work.
The third does not supply power, nor does the fan work.
To answer your question, I think, whether or not the fan works may or may not be related
to the power supply working. Of all the parts to go bad in a power supply, the fan is the most likely
since it is the only moving part. But if the fan goes bad, It can easily take the rest of the
power supply with it.

An AT formfactor power supply doesn't need the switches (power and reset from the front of the case) hooked up but an ATX formfactor PSU does need these switches hooked up to the motherboard so you can turn the PSU on. There is a way to turn on an ATX PSU you need to short the green wire to black. (http://www.virtual-hideout.net/guides/atx_psu_mods/index.shtml) If you hook up AC power to an ATX PSU without it being switched on all you will get is stand-by 5V and no fan.
