Is there a benefit to having a static IP address over DHCP for a personal broadband internet account? I understand the need for a static IP for a business account that needs it for server reasons, but for personal accounts, is there any benefits? Wouldn't using DHCP add a slight security measure by occasionally changing the IP address?

dynamic- pros; security, cheaper

cons- a little more difficult to be a server than with static, most ISP's don't like you serving files or sites from a dynamic connection.

static- pros; usually up and downlaods are the same speed, can be used easier to serv web sites/files (ftp).

cons- more expensive, usually lower down and up speeds unless you pay quite a bit more $$

Nowadays you don't really need to worry about the hosting issues, you can assign dynamic addresses to static domain names with some nifty software... check out www.dyndns.com (http://www.dyndns.com) for more info.

I'd really say there isn't much difference, there isn't likely to be any problems using a dynamically assigned ip unless you are trying to host, but even then there are workarounds.

Like Sea said, there is an added security risk with having a static ip, but it isn't significant - especially if you are going to be connected by broadband most of the time anyway. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

If there is a big cost saving, go dynamic, if there isn't much difference, go static, it's simpler.
