View Full Version : phone to speakers?

I was trying to install XP Pro recently (it wouldn't take, but that is another story). My modem was connected to my phone line and someone was making a phone call at the moment and everything that was said on either end was played through my speakers, oblivious to them.
I am wondering why it was doing this. I have been wanting to use my phone through my computer, this could give me hints as to how to go about it.

Hello Jes,
I am guessing that there was some software that was installed for your modem. This software is what allows you to use your phone thru your computer. Depending on the software you have, you can have speaker phone, voice mail with mutipul boxes, automatic fax reception, automated fax sending, speed dial, voice activation,..... you get the picture.

The funny thing here is, you were trying to install an operating system at the time. Why did it pick up the phone line and put the conversation over the speakers??? Can't rightly answer that one. At what point in the install did this happen? Was this a fresh install or upgrade? Any more info on what was happening at the time might help.
I am thinking it was just a fluke but curious just the same.

Good luck http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/cool.gif

Yes, it was sort of a fluke happening. I didn't pick up the phone or anything like that. My speakers just started. This happened when Windows started transfering files from CD to HD. This was an upgrade from Win 98 SE. XP would not recognize my modem when it was intalled and I didn't like the idea of not having Internet access so I formated and reinstalled Win 98 SE.
I would like to duplicate this, in a way. I would like to have phone output coming from my speakers so I don't have to hold the phone to my head. (yeah, im kinda lazy)

That can be done, it takes a speakerphone program such as BitWare or Quick Link, others are available too, and you have to run a patch cable from the Line Out on your modem to the Line In on the sound card. I'm not positive that's the setup, but according to my old Zoltrix manual that's the best I understand it.

Once wired properly and with a mic it should allow you to use the modem as a speakerphone, when not connected to the Internet.

I will try that. I'll have to get the cable with two male ends, i don't have one here.
I am wondering if I have to do that. As you see it my first posting, the audio signals can get from my phone line to my speakers.
Also, this is one of those computers that the big companies (HP in this case) build for the computer illiterate massess so it is as cheap and simple as possible and the modem and the sound card are connected (they have wires running between them).

Ok, jes, if it is already wired internally all you need is the appropriate software......

Paleo Pete mentioned using Bitware or Quick Link. I have Quick Link 2 for faxing. How do I set it up?

I haven't used Quick Link II, I have version III. When you open it look through the menu bar, it should have an option to set up the modem. Then look for a menu item to set up faxing. In the fax setup you will have to tell it what phone number to use, so recipients can send return faxes, how many rings to wait till it answers, and how to answer.

Since Quick Link works as fax, data transfer or answering machine/speakerphone, it has options to answer as fax, voice, data or automatically detect. Any time I receive a fax I usually know about it beforehand, so I set it to answer fax only. The reason is most fax machines emit a fax ID signal, telling the other end it's a fax. Some machines don't, so it will try to answer as a voice call.

to send faxes, just make sure Quick Link is installed and working, and any program that prints can usually send a document as a fax by clicking Print from the File menu NOT the Print icon. The Print icon goes directly to your printer, the Print option in the file menu lets you select which printer to use. Once Quick Link is installed you should also have a Quick Link Fax listed as one of your printers. Select that one as the printer and it will send it as a fax. It opens the dialogue box and lets you tell it what phone number to dial, etc, before sending.

When installing Quick Link, if it's not already installed, DO NOT let it set Quick Link Fax as default printer, or you'll be trying to fax every document you try to print...

It is Quicklink 3 that I have. That was just a typo.
It is that answering machine/speakerphone function that I want but I don't see how to set that up.
As to the default printer thing, the printer is my HP Deskjet right now.

When I go to setup - preferences and then the answer tab, there are two boxes--Answer mode and Answer Options. There are two radio buttons in the Answer mode. Normal answer is already selected for me and I cannot change it. Below that, there is a drop-down menu. In it are "fax", "data", "fax and data" and "ignor ring". To get this working, shouldn't there be a "voice" option there? It is Quick Link 3.2.1
