Hello Trek, And welcome to the PC guide Forums. You don't say what OS you are running, but assuming Win98, one way of getting screen shots is to use the program Screen Print. This saves the whole screen as a bitmap which can be edited in whatever program you have and cropped to the relevant bits. Or, just using Shift/Printscreen key copies the active window to the clipboard. this can then be pasted into your picture editor, and saved in whatever format you want. Tthe Printscreen key (unshifted) copies the whole window to the clipboard.
Hope That helps.

Open Word or even WordPad and start the document. When you reach a screen shot point, set it up and hit Print Screen, or Alt - Print Screen for just the active window. Pull the document back up and hit Ctrl-V to insert. When you're done, go to File-Send in WordPad or File-SendTo-Mail Recipient in Word.

Most versions of Paint Shop Pro have a screen capture utility. MS office XP(Powerpoint, Word, Excel, Publisher) can create a screenshot using Paint Shop Pro 7 by using the insert-->object-->Paint Shop Pro 7 screen capture. The Paint Shop Pro 7 screen capture will start within the MS Office application. Settup the capture navigate to the screen to capture and capture it straight to the MS Office application. This also works in MS Works 2002(ver 6). This only works if you have both programs installed. This may work in prior vervions of MS Office and MS Works but it doesn't work in Word 97 or MS Works 4.5(MS Works Suite 99).

OK Gang,
Not trying to be an ass here, but the whole idea of buying, downloading and installing a piece of software to capture a screenshot and inserting it into a document seems kinda ridiculous. We have the capability of doing all of this already.
It has been described briefly by David http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/wink.gif
I don't think you are going to find a program that will just grab the image you want and automaticly place you where you want in the page. Seems to me the setting up of something like that would be more work then hitting the PrtSc button on the function buttons, then open Paint and hit Ctrl-V to paste in. Name this file accordingly. Type the text you want, when you get to the place you want the image, open the image, R-click and hit "Copy", then go back to you text doc with the curser at the insert point and hit Ctrl-V.
This will work in Wordpad, Word, WordPerfect, and I am sure in StarOffice's wordprocessor.
You can also use the wordprocessor's "Insert" options and navigate to the desired image.
If you are trying to do this in an HTML document for a web page, it can go a little differently. Although there are people here who can help with this, Web pages are not the main focus here. I would recommend checking into Here (http://www.mayworks.com/cgi-bin/ikonboard/ikonboard.cgi) for more detailed web design help.
Andy, as said before, I would be happy to help you with any of this, just drop me a line any time http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/wink.gif

I STILL like Print Screen 2000.
with it, you don't do ANYTHING- you just press the printscreen button and INSTANTLY not only is your screen captured but it leaps to life right there in front of you ready to edit, save in ANY format.

I wish to thank you all for your prompt replys. They have all been, for the most part very helpful. Bossman I do not know why but every time I follow those instructions on my machine, it does not work!! No matter what key combo I chose I do not get a screen shot to my knowledge! Sea, thank you as well. As andyswork said we are friends here locally and are working on this project jointly. Dont let him snow you all, he has been brilliant in his work!! Although I am very glad to have sparked his interest in computers, I now feel that I have created a monster!! Once I lit his fuse so to speak he has flare up like a bonfire. Absorbing information at a phonominal rate. In some areas he has surpassed me in some areas!!! Watch out Bill Gates!!! Either I will get ya or andyswork will!!!!! THANKS AGAIN EVERYONE!!!!!

Hello Trek,
Not sure what all the above is about but we try not to reply with a quote unless it has specific information contained in it. Just repeating everyone elses responses doesn't help much. All who come here can see all of the responses http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/wink.gif
As for not seeing whether you got the screenshot, be sure you have clipboard viewer installed, hit the PrtSc button, then open clipboard viewer. You will see everything that was in the screenshot. You can not do much with the clipboard file, it just varifies that you got your shot. Once you have your screenshot, you will need to paste it into an image editing program (Paint, PaintShop Pro, Photoshop,...) then save it in an appropriate format.
If you are following the above and not getting anything still, you may have a problem with your PrtSc button. If you are using a program like Sea described, then you will see some immediate response. This does not happen with the Windows version of this function. YOU NEED TO PASTE IT INTO SOMEWHERE ELSE.
I also use a program called Screenshot Deluxe from Parsons Technology (Mattel.com) that can be handy. You can use it to outline a specific area of any image on your screen (except a DVD shot http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/frown.gif ) and save it as any number of formats.
Hope this helps http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/cool.gif

Bassman is correct, I have taken screenshots using win3.11, 95, 98 and 98 SE using the same procedure. The [Print Screen] key copies the desktop to the clipboard, then I can open Paint, MS Photo Editor, Kodak Imaging, iPhoto or any of several other image editing programs I have tried and paste that image into it, then save as a JPG, BMP or whatever file type I want.
The thing to remember is you have to paste it into an image editor, it does not simply appear in another application, and cannot be pasted into a word processor. I haven't tried the Word 97 drawing application, it might work too but I can't verify it.
Use a screenshot utility if you want to, that's a matter of personal preference, my preference is to avoid yet another program istalled on my computer that I would use only on rare occasions, especially when existing Windows applications will do the trick, once you understand how it works...
And what's the deal with all the quotes????

Hey Pete,
Just tried the paste into Word trick to be sure.
Used the Edit menu at the top, then hit paste (from clipboard) and it worked fine.

just went and found snagit (6.0free), installed and tried it.
in comparison to the immense effort it took to get it I was waiting for it to do magical things.
it does nothing that printkey2000 doesn't do and do easier.
was extremely difficult to find the free one, had to download some thing called gigex agent control??- just to try and get the file.
then there's ease of use. With Printkey2000 you merely have to press the "Printscreen" button {{once}} that's it.
with snagit- you need to press at least 3 buttons- (and remember what they are))
sticking with mine.

Personally i use the standard { printscreen } key and just paste it to paint, or where ever i need it to go.

I was reading through this thread and just wanted to add that I have been using the print screen key to paste screenshots to word since I learned what the print screen key was for.
I just tried it again to be sure, took a screenshot of this thread, opened wordpad, typed in a line of text, then just hit paste, and viola, there was the screenshot.
I never gave a thought to doing it any other way.
I have also pasted a screenshot to paint, clipped out specific parts, copied them, and pasted that to another file, or printed.
