Notebook CD/DVD drive question

Hi, this is my first post here.
I'm wondering if my old Acer Travelmate 290 will recognize a newer CD/DVD RW combo drive? Will it work as long as it physically fits in the Acer drive carrier plastic? Will Bios recognize it?

That is a big...maybe.

As far as recognizing it...it should at least acknowledge the fact that it is an IDE/ATA/ATAPI device and provide at least a basic functionality. Whether or not it allows you to use DMA is another question.
