Slow Browser Issues - HiJack Log Review Request

Problem: I have two PCs on a network, DSL connection, both running Win XP, and I use IE7. For the past 4 days or so, I've experienced slow webpage loading and in some cases, failure to load other pages. The second PC shares a printer with the first PC; there's another issue of the second PC being unable to print (although I can still print from the first (host) PC just fine). Additionally, the 2nd PC seems to have no internet-browsing/speed problem; just the printing problem. I suspect malware, but I'm not sure.

Below are the results of a HiJackThis scan on the first PC. Thank you in advance for your help in reviewing and suggesting what to do next.

Of note, I wasn't able to submit this post on this forum through my first PC ... browser timed out and said "couldn't display the webpage". I had to copy/paste and email to myself and retrieve on the second PC to post.

Update:

I found a HiJackThis tutorial, and started checking out my registry entries. I think I found a possible O16 activeX culprit:

1D4DB7D2-6EC9-47A3-BD87-1E41684E07BB

CastleCops lists it as an "X" -- definitely bad item -- so I'll use HiJackThis to fix it. I'll continue looking at the rest of the items... will post an update if repair/deletion of that entry solves the problem.

Oops, I just read classicsoftware's sticky on this forum warning us NOT to fix anything in HiJack without being instructed to do so ... :eek:

but hopefully the O16: 1D4DB7D2-6EC9-47A3-BD87-1E41684E07BB fix was warranted. The good news is, after a re-boot, IE browser appears back to normal and up to speed. I was able to load webpages that previously didn't load. :)

I'm hoping that was the only problem, but I still suspect I'll need to do further checking as to why the 2nd PC is still having printing issues. Maybe I'll start with a HijackThis scan of the 2nd PC.

Which ISP are you actually using?

There is evidence of two of them in your log...all proprietary connection software...it amazes me that you can actually get online at all.

The DSL connection is through AT&T/SBC. I also tend to have my AOL browser open as well (via the AT&T DSL connection).

I do have a question about the R1 and 2nd R0 entries ... they both appear to be related to the SBC/Yahoo DSL connection ... what does ShellNext mean? Can I get rid of the R1 entry? Thank you!

I was able to print an Excel file using the 2nd PC. The printing issue is most obvious when I'm trying to print something from the web, or if download an Adobe PDF document from the web and attempt to print that document. The file will not print, and all I get is a pop-up "Preparing to print - 0%". Then, IE becomes non-responsive, and I have to close all programs to clear things up.

Problem: Can't print webpages from IE7, can't print PDF documents. I get a message in Adobe stating "unable to start print job". IE usually freezes up, and I have to ctrl-alt-del to close the non-responsive browser.

However, there is no problem viewing/loading webpages. Computer speed seems fine (and in fact, browsing the web is noticeably faster than the first PC). The problem arises when I try to print web documents. Documents from Word, Excel, and emails (via AOL) all print fine.

You do know that duplicating functions...the AOL and your McAfee 'security' suite and Symantec/Norton, tends to bog down machines?

Choose one...and disable the others and uninstall them (I'd choose McAfee out what is on your machine...and ditch AOL (completely) and whatever Symantec stuff there is...)

I took care of that, thank you. :) I fixed the registry errors and cleaned up spyware on both PCs, now all is back to normal. PC #1 is much faster than before, and PC #2 now prints all documents fine.

mjc, I need some help again please. In spite of the recent spyware removal, the same problem came back to haunt me. I'm having the same problem of slow browsing/can't open web pages on PC#1, and inability to print anything from PC#2. PC#2 can surf the net just fine though. Also, AOL software is dysfunctional on PC#1, but works okay on PC#2.

I've run the same spyware removal programs on both PCs, and it doesn't appear that any spyware is lurking. The only exception is a couple of adware threats that were supposed to be removed by the anti-spyware program but seem to keep coming back. (the adware names are Bill's Pie Toss and IM Inspector -- which I believe are linked to AOL).

Any suggestions on what steps to take next? Thank you...

Thank you mjc. Unfortunately I haven't been able to post a fresh HJT log due to Internet connectivity issues. The situation appears to be getting worse. I tried to copy the log to an email to send to myself so I can retrieve it from another "working" PC on the network, but no luck there. With IE, I get "can't display the webpage", and through AOL software, I get repeated "66DCVS" errors. I'm currently working from another PC on the network which apparently has no browser problems.

Recap of the current problem:

1. Host PC: Web browser connectivity issue. Can't open webpages; or web pages are very slow to open; some elements don't load; can't post messages to forums such as this. The browser problem applies to IE7 and AOL. (However, I have no problem running other third party applications that utilize an internet connection).

2. Client PC: Print spooler issue - repeated "nonresponse" when attempting to print any type of document. This client shares a printer which is connected to the host PC. As mentioned, the host PC is the one having the web connectivity issue. However, there is NO problem printing from the host PC. When attempting to print from the client PC, I usually get a message stating that there's no response from the printer, or that the print spooler service is not working.

What I've done so far:

-Scanned with HJT and got a log (but am having trouble posting it)
-Scanned with RegCure and fixed all errors on both the host and client PC
-Theoretically got rid of malware using "Identity Patrol/Registry Patrol" ... however in doing further research on the net, I realized these applications probably did more harm that good. Hence, I switched to RegCure instead.
-Checked all cable connections; cleaned dust from the tower
-Checked Print Spooler services to make sure it was set to "automatic";
-Checked network connections to make sure sharing setting were enabled correctly
-Reinstalled printer-specific drivers to the client PC
-Added all updates to Windows (incl. SP3)

Any other suggestions on what to check out? Or any other way to work around getting that HJT log posted? I'm unable to post to the forum or send email from the host PC that's having the browser problems.

Copy the log to a USB drive or a CD and transfer it that way...

Use a Linux LiveCD (Knoppix (http://knoppix.com/)) to boot the problem machine and there is a 90+% chance that it will automatically configure your network connection and allow you to access both the log file and the internet from the problem machine.

Try Portable FireFox (http://portableapps.com/news/2008-09-28_-_firefox_portable_3.0.3), run from a USB drive or a CD...

I prefer either the LiveCD or Portable Firefox to transferring anything to another computer.
