Hello,

I was trying to upgrade the memory on my Asus P4P800S motherboard. I had two sticks of corsair ram at 512 each stick. I bought 2 sticks of G.Skill DDR PC-3200 Ram. One gig per stick. I have changed ram many times and never had a problem. These G.Skill sticks have a red metal heat spreader on them. I am not quite sure, but they might have been touching after they were installed. The new ram seated properly in place. I hit the switch to turn on the computer and I heard a spark like static and I smelled something for about 2 seconds. I got no beep and no video. The hard drive light stays on constantly but the machine never boots or beeps. I turned it off. The new ram was very warm when I removed it. I replaced it with my old ram. I hit the switch and I still get no beep, no video and the hard drive light just stays on constantly. I am fearing that maybe the new ram was touching and caused a short and now my mother board is fried. I am currently trying the cmos battery removal to see if maybe it will boot after that. Any ideas or opinions that I might have fried it?:(

I have now replaced the CMOS battery and still no joy. Also with all ram removed I get the same response as described above with either new or old ram installed.

Sounds like the memory slots shorted out the mobo. After you pulled the cmos did you reset the jumper?

In your mobo manual it will show u exactly which jumper pin to reset.

Its your last resort.

No I did not reset any jumper. I do just happen to have the manual for my motherboard. I will investigate that. This computer is 6 years old, but it still was pretty much up to date. It has a socket 478 Pentium 2.4 chip in it. I did not realize till I was pricing new mobo's that socket 478 seems quite outdated now. Newegg only had 4 mobo's that have it. This might just be a good excuse for me to upgrade and get a board that supports duo core. And of course I'd have to buy new HD's because mine are IDE and everthing is moving to SATA.
