Hello

Either my monitor goes into standby or my PC reboots itself. I got this error report (see picture)

I cleaned the video card fan and reinserted it into its AGP slot.

From what I have googled I'm guessing this is a video card driver issue. Would I be right in thinking this?

Do I need to do anything other than reinstall the video drivers and can anyone tell me how to totally get rid of the Nvidia drivers so I can do a full install of updated drivers?

Thanks for any help and advice.

Using XP or Vista?

XP--> Control Panel\Add-Remove programs\Display Driver (ATI or Nvidia usually). Highlight driver and hit uninstall tab. Reboot the pc. Find your new driver (make sure its a 32 bit driver if your OS is 32 bit, likewise if ur OS is 64 bit you want the new 64 bit video driver.) and install it.

Vista--> Control Panel\Programs and Features\ the rest is the same as above.

Sorry, XP. This does look like a video driver problem doesn't it?

That would be my guess, pc hardware is my strength and software is my weakness.

Is it best to do the uninstall in safe mode?

What video card do you have and what exactly are you doing when theproblem happens?

Hi MJC

Think we spoke last about 2 years ago.

I'm running an Nvidia Geforce 6800le AGP (I can't remember the exact make, might be Gainward), with all the shaders and pipes unlocked with Rivatuner.

I'm not really doing anything to make this happen, either the pc freezes, reboots or the monitor goes into standby while the pc is still running. It was this latter symptom that made me think it was the video drivers.

I've installed the Nvidia 178.13 drivers and the Pc has been steady all evening, about 5 hours now. Before that it was falling over frequently (every 15mins or so) sometimes freezing before booting fully.

I was wondering if the error message I posted held any details about what was wrong.

Those kind of errors can be common for 'unlocked' cards...especially as they age. Also, the software unlocked cards do tend to be a bit more picky about drivers than their stock counterparts.

Although now it froze at 5 am which is about 12 hours running ok. I could lock up the pipes and shaders again and see if that helps.

It's worth a try.

It's looking pretty stable now. Thought that Nvidia drivers had to be specially cleaned (in safe mode) before updating. Looks like the new one is working well on top of the old one.

Thanks for all the relies and help

The latest editions are much better at self removal...not perfect, but better. If it starts giving you fits again, try the removal in Safe Mode.

This problem came back very soon after I posted last. Here is an update to this.

I initially thought this problem was a video card or video driver intermittent failure and have now pretty much built a new PC only to have the problem remain. The only things from the original build are the case, power supply, monitor, hard disk (not system) and the optical drive.

I've got a new monitor ordered because I thought it must that which is failing but it looks to me like the power supply is getting a bit temperamental.
I noticed today that when I bang my desk with my fist my PC loses power for a spilt second (case fan leds go off) which sends the monitor into standby mode from which it cannot be wakened. It doesn't even take much of a bang to cause this effect.

I've disconnected the reset switch in case that was somehow powering it down and I've poked around the power supply wires with a wooden spoon to try to replicate the problem but it only happens when it is knocked or as per the original problem, at seemingly random times for no reason.

Does this indicate a power supply problem? Has anyone else experienced this?
