View Full Version : Forum Rules and Regulations
Are they posted somewhere? Basically I got threatened by a moderator here when all I've done is be helpful to all I've posted to. I did create a thread asking if anybody lived in a 40 mile radius from me as I would have invited a forum member to my home to view a spare LCD monitor I have. And the guy basically threatens me?
If I get banned for that it is the websites loss, nobody here is more helpful then myself.
(Its not the sheer number of posts a member has that SHOULD count, its the content of whats written).

You did not offer your monitor for viewing, you offered it for sale... This issue has been discussed many times and we have made it clear that we do not allow classified advertising in this forum... If you look at some of the posts in Bit Bucket, you will see that most advertisers are banned outright, but you were not because you have been offering suggestions rather than simply posting to advertise... While you may have chosen to take my comments as a threat, they were intended as a warning so that you would not make the same mistake again...
If I get banned for that it is the websites loss, nobody here is more helpful then myself. It is good that you have a high opinion of yourself... However, I can name a number of people who have clearly established themselves as quite a bit more helpful than you have shown yourself to be... With time, you may eventually join that group, but I would say your assessment is premature...
And I would reply that I am done here.

Insult
If you want to go, then go ahead and go. But you really haven't been a member of this forum long enough to know what it stands for. I have and I've visited a lot of forums. I can tell you that you will get more respect here than from any other forum.

Easy there, WSS.
No it wasn't me, but I saw the original post and IMHO it was out of bounds.
The forums do have long-standing rules regarding "commercial activity" on the forums, you agree to that when you register here.
IXL has also posted his direction that members should not engage in selling items such as is performed on sites like Craigslist or EBay in these forums.
If you ran afoul of those rules and were warned by a moderator, I suggest you stop doing the activity that got you warned.
If you feel this is unfair, you can appeal directly to IXL by emailing him.
I am a high strung individual, self admittedly.
What got my goat was I saw no Rules and Regulations thread stickied and had I, for an instant, knew I couldn't show and sell an item IN PERSON to another forum member I would have refrained from making the post.
And then a moderator, not an administrator, threatens me sorta?
Its forgotten on my part, now that I know one rule anyway.
Yes, there is no specific thread stickied...and the blurb on the registration page is rather vague and generic.
Like the 'no classifieds' rule most of the other rules are buried deep in the oldest threads, from way back in 2000 and 2001.
Should they be posted in one place...yeah.
Being one of the oldest mods (and mods here are pretty much the same as admins elsewhere--some of us here are holdovers from way back when; the old newsgroups/BBS days...back then admins where the guys who ran the servers and more or less made sure that things 'worked' and the mods were the guys who did the 'grunt work', kept the peace and in general ran the things, <rant>none of this elevation of status crap that plagues so many forums these days</rant>.), I must admit that I didn't know that there wasn't a more detailed page on the rules...I was sure there was a link on the registration page to something more than 'be nice, be legal'.
But in a nutshell...
1. No spam.
2. No 'flame wars'.
3. No classifieds.
4. No warez/cracks/pirated software or how to.
5. No password 'cracking'.
Thanks for the clarifying reply, mjc.

you'll have no more problems from me.

That's OK, WSS. Since you're from New York, I might even start pulling for the New York Yankees. Well--maybe.:) Since the Cleveland Indians did so poorly, I'm going to have to start looking for an alternate teem to pull for.
LOL, Frank.
I'm an OLD St. Louis Cardinals fan, since 67! Not a fan of either NY team. I live prolly 200 miles north of NYC.

It's very, very true and nor is there anything in the General FAQs or the FAQs Forum to lay out the policies on advertising and suchlike. This really should be addressed by ixl in the registration rules plus a sticky or FAQ somewhere. The only bit in the rules that might apply is the catch all: "The owners of The PC Guide Discussion Forums reserve the right to remove, edit, move or close any thread for any reason."
Possibly in the general war against spamming we have become a little too fierce over the occasional bit of self-advertising. That of course would also depend on the manner in which it is done.
I vote for moving this thread from the bit bucket to a sticky in the FAQ until something else more definitive on the issue is arrived at.
I'm for deleting this entire thread, myself. It's a bit embarassing on my end.
Maybe one of the moderators can construct a concise FORUM R+R thread for the stickiness?

I think we can come up with something better to use as a guide than a thread that started as an attack and insult...

Right; and I think we can all be a little more tactful when someone posts something that seems like advertising, especially if it's the first one.

Did your feelings get hurt, oh moderator with the inflated ego?
ACTUALLY, you had no RULES AND REGULATIONS so your initial response was not only inappropriate and inaccurate but rather presumptious.
Some moderators ego trip and from what I've seen you seem to be the only one at this website. Over moderation is not a good thing, especially on a board with very slow traffic.
Moderators like Komiski and MJC are appreciated as they actually answer people's questions and reply to their problems! You, on the other hand, I have no use for.
And what happens to me here, I no longer care. I answer pc problems at other websites too.

WSS,
don't start with insults again, you should treat everyone here with respect.
Just a suggestion.

Lets liven it up, shall we?
10 mods and barely any people posting. The GESTAPO effect, headed by Budfred.
He didn't want to let it die, and now it won't.

WSS,
But you started with the insults, not Budfred.
I tried to warn you but you would not let it go. Now you want to act like moderators are Gestapo?
You are suspended for the next three days for historical ignorance and troll activity.
If you come back after that period and continue it can be made permanent.
If you are going to quote me, make the quote complete.
