I just got a pop-up form my av that I was getting an e-mail that contained an program that had a virus. This startled me so much, since it was the first time since I installed it in Sept. 01, that my mind went blank. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/eek.gif
The pop-up had a dropdown menu that gave me these options, Delete the virus from the program, delete the program copntaining the virus,Isolate the program, and one other that slips my mind. In my haste I chose Delete the program. I guess it did that but left the message on my e-mail list.I am using outlook express and have it set not to automatically open documents(something I learned here). I clickred to delete the message, then went to the deleted message file and deleted it there. Now I am worried that maybe I should have done it different.
I am running windows ME my av is ontrac sytem suite.
What do you guys think?

I think you handled the situation the best way you could. I don't think the virus would have had a chance to run. Be sure to run a full virus scan, if you haven't already, just to be sure.

I just did a complete file scan at maximum strength it came up showing 'No Virus Found' this scans everything except files locked by windows or encrypted files. So I guess I am okay for now. By the way the message was from 'luckylady' and the subject was 'a fun website'.

How do you set OE to not automatically open stuf?
Is there something in the Advanced tab that I am overlooking?

Jes,
Up in the toolbar find customize. For me it's to the right with the right arrow. Then click on preview, then make sure it is disabled.

OR,
Go to view then layout and deselect preview. Either way works.

Yes View, layout, deselect preview pane, that is how I did it on mine. I suggest this for anyone using OE. I also have deleted all the e-mail addresses from my address book and will type them in, it is alittle more trouble but I would hate it if someone got a virus through my computer. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/frown.gif

I keep addresses in my OE but I also make a new contact named A + A as first and last names and use a nonvalid e-mail address like fxghjjk for example. (You have to click on 'Use this address anyway?') This way, if a virus tries to send itself to my whole address book I get an instant pop-up that states 'could not send mail to AA at fghjjkl address because it is not a etc....' That way I would be alerted that my pc is infected and I know to try and eradicate the problem.

But the newer virii are getting smarter so your way is probably safest. But you could use JUST the fake name and address so it would still alert you to it's presence.

Plus you could always create a folder with all the pertinent info and just copy and paste names and addys when you want to send an e-mail. At least it MAY be faster than typing like me with 10 thumbs bumping into each other LOL http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/frown.gif
