http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/frown.gif I'm fairly new to this game so my knowledge is limited. Is a laplink used to transfer files from one P.C to another or does it transfer everything. If I get one how do i use it.? I need to be led very slowly here.
Thanks a million
A Lap link cable is a special cable with the RTS and CTS ( Ready to send and Clear to send) signal wires reversed. Other wise known as a null modem cable.
It allows you to connect 2 systems together without the use of a modem.
Yet fools the system into reading as if a modem was in use.
When setup with a Remote and a slave program it will allow you to transfer files between the two systems in much the same way you download files from a server or website to your system ..
Once connected by the cable you setup and start the slave program on one system.
The run the Remote control program on the other.
You can transfer files in both directions from the remote system. ( download or FTP style )
The Laplink Program contains both remote and slave.
it can also be done using other programs Like PcAnywhere and the transfer applet in windows. Direct connect.
Laplink was originally designed for use between a laptop and desktop system Hence the name

Hi Pingin
Laplink is a program that runs on two computers to allow you to transfer files from one to the other. To make it work you need a "crossover" cable that connects between either the serial or parallel ports on the two machines. Cables are listed by Belkin, and any computer shop should have them, usually labelled as laplink type. You load the program on both machines, connect up the cable, and away you go. Files can be moved in either direction for either backup, or, it's original intention, to download files from a laptop to a desktop machine. hope that helps.

Rick & David thanks for the quick replies.Do you get some kind of a driver with the cable .I don't understand when you say start the program (forgive my ignorance ). Where do you set it up ?Also what does remote & slave mean?
Again thanks for being so helpful

OK...
LapLink (http://www.laplink.com/) is a program, used as described above. It should be installed on both computers to be able to work. One computer is designated as client, the other as server.
The laplink cable (http://www.hardwarebook.net/cable/parallel/interlink.html) (null modem cable) is used to accomplish file transfers, using that program, or any of several others, PC Anywhere being one of the most familiar. The windows DCC will serve the same purpose. {Direct Cable Connection) More info on the laplink cable Here (http://www.nullmodem.com/LapLink.htm) and Here (http://www.powerload.fsnet.co.uk/cable.htm)
