OK - I realise it could be anything - but would appreciate some starters. I bought a Compac D510 low profile box Pentium P4 2.8G - It had been working fine and then the other day when I pressed the on switch there was a noise like a major short circuit - now its completely dead - is it a) worth checking anything (if so - what?) or b) Throw it away

Welcome! Well, surely that BANG couldn't have been a good thing! Are you comfortable opening up your case? If so, unplug the power cord and open it up, and see if you smell anything. You could've fried something.

Welcome to http://www.pcguide.com/ubb/pcgubb.gif discussion forums.....
I would look at the power supply. The bad news is it can fry the motherboard when it goes bad so that's where I would start.

Built a few over the years - no probs taking it apart. Nothing looked or smelled burnt, wasn't sure how to test the psu but just been reading the thread on testing psu - so will give that a go. Thanks so far... may be back later.

ps.. is it possible to supply power from a standard ATX psu to the one that powers this low profile thingy - on first inpection the connectors are dissimilar
