I am not sure were to begin troubleshooting this problem.

I want to update a dictionary in Open Office. This required an .oxt file. When I dowload the file with firefox the file is a .part and when I download the file with IE the file doesn't even seem to get here.

Is it possible that my Vista Home Premium just doesn't know what to do with an .oxt file?

You don't have any third party download managers running?

Usually, a .part file is an incomplete download...you know, a part of the whole file...

It could be that the server is having problems...

Also, OpenOffice should be able to download the file itself...I haven't tried it in a while, but it used to be able to...

The only dowload manager that I use is the one built in to Firefox.

I understand that many things have changed for OpenOffice. There is an Extension Manager to add extensions such as this and it doen't seem to have any option to download for itself.

I hadn't considered the fact that it could be a server problem. I will try it again in a few days.

If there is a mirror for the file, try that...sometimes the main server is swamped and downloads have trouble completing. That is one reason for .part files...

Well, if you have Firefox, try using DTA (http://www.downthemall.net/)

It's a download manger that acts also and an accelerator, the only times that I have problems is if you use it with Rapidshare. I hardly go there so it doens't bother me all that much, i just use the normal firefox download manager to download from rapidshare. As for everything else DTA seems to work fantasticly and the accelerator part of it does work. As an example I downloaded a driver (roughly 26mb) from nvidia at about 150-200kb/s with the normal firefox download but with DTA it went up to 400-450kb/s on that same file. So give that a try, and if not go to Google (http://www.downthemall.net/) and search for the necessary download.

I just went to download.com and downloaded Winzip. The file on my desktop is a .part. It seems that somehow my downloads aren't finishing. Maybe should I try renstalling Firefox?

I took some rather drastic measures (I had a few other reasons too) and ended up restoring my drive. The oxt file no longer downloads as a .part file. Windows seems to recognize it and there is an icon for it but now when I tell the OO Extension Manager to add the dictionary I get the following: http://jesse.sasktelwebsite.net/Untitled.jpg
It seems that I have to pay for the privilege of spell check now. It isn't very expensive. I might.

It looks like that dictionary is for the upcoming OO.o 3.0...what version are you currently running?'

And where did you download it from?

Right...I probably just downloaded the wrong dictionary. I have v2.4 but I don't see the Canadian English dictionary for that.

Can someone help me find a dictionary for OO 2.4.1 ? I can't seem to find what I need. I would prefer Canadian English but US English would be fine.
