Hi,
can anyone help me.
I have an laptop, Compaq 386s/20 (yes, its pocessor model & speed http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif )
Now, I've been searching & found out that APM came about 1992. This bios
is dated june 91. When I bought it, it ran dos & it suspended itself after a
few minutes (the value coud be set in BIOS) and beeped before the battery died. Now I installed linux and the only powersaving I get is HDD spindown.
Not even a beep to warn about the battery! I kompiled a new kernel with APM support, but at boot it said APMbios not found http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/frown.gif
How can I get the beeps back http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif Teyre _really_ useful with linux http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif
Thanks in advance

I think you actually had a small program that made its own partition to use for saving everything when suspending...this program and partition where probably lost when you wiped the drive to install linux, you may want to check the Compaq/HP sites for info on it. Not sure if there is a version of the program for Linux or even if the distribution you have would support those features, but you may want to try http://www.linux-laptop.net/ to see if you can dig up anything.

First, I'm not happy without warnings about low battery.
It seems that the battery dies _only_ when I do something critical http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/frown.gif
(Of course, the Hdd spins up then & thats why the battery dies...).
And some man pages say you only should shut down like this if the processor is on fire http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/frown.gif I've done it twice now... no damage yet. So I'm not happy http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/eek.gif (BTW wasnt linux made for the 386? So it should run on it aswell http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif )
Thanks for the link mjc. Searched there, but all tips require that the bios has APM support. I've asked Compaq and they answered that they don't support unix http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/rolleyes.gif I then asked about any specifications about the issue, but they didn't answer at all, talk about customer support http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/mad.gif
Propably a hopeless search.
I dont think that the suspend (under dos) wrote anything to disk.
The computer has a specific button which "restarts" it after suspend.
Actually, I'm beginning to think the correct prase is "standby" not suspend...
Oh well, I'd still like those beeps http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif
