how do you split screens?

hi, im currently trying to hook my desktop (emachines) up to my hdtv but can't figure out how to split my screen. im using a hdmi cable so if anyone can help id be really greatfull.....

If you have multiple monitor outputs then they are usually configured from the Display Settings after Right Clicking the Desktop and choosing properties.
