On WinMe, how do you stop the computer from asking you to log in everytime you boot? It is on my home computer, so no one else uses it, so it is just a waste of time.

This article from the MSKB: regarding password problems (http://support.microsoft.com/search/preview.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q306322)..may help. I think you just need to remove all previous password things, and then when it comes up the first time again asking for the password..don't put anything in the box, just click "okay" and it will go from there into Windows and won't ever ask you again.

Search for and delete all files with the .PWL extensionin the search box type *.PWL to find them. Reboot and when Windows asks for a password leave the box blank and hit enter and it should not ask again.

Requires it). You can go to the TCP/IP properties page and change the login property from Microsoft network logon to Windows logon and you won't be asked to logon to the network again. Windows logon, network logon, and internet logon are three different logons and should be dealt with differently. The original poster is having trouble with Windows logon, not network logon.

Another thing you can try is goto start-->settings-->control panel-->passwords-->user profiles tab-->click on "All users of this computer use the same preferences and desktop settings."

Hehe; the opposite of what was asked is to force someone to logon by doing away with the Cancel button. It involves a Registry Tweak so beginners bewary of editing the registry.

If your Win95/98 Computer is used in a multiple user environment you can restrict the computer useage for just authorized users by disabling the Cancel button in the Login box. Follow these steps:

Locate the directory HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Network\Logon. If the Logon directory is missing, create it by right- clicking on the Network folder, select New=>Key and type in Logon. Right-click in the right window pane and select New=>DWORD Value and name it MustBeValidated . Make the value 1 (one).
Exit the Registry Editor and restart your computer.

This can be defeated by booting to a floppy and using the good old scanreg /restore or boot to safe mode and edit the registry manually or use the last known good config and in Win ME you can use system restore to remove the password requirement. Win 9X is not secure by any means

I know, I know, not supposed to hitchhike http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/rolleyes.gif , but this is a current topic and I would like to address another issue with this in case HewittC4 has the same problem.

I have deleted all .pwl files and upon restart, I am presented with a logon box with no user names and can not use the OK button (grayed out).
Whats next?

Thanks http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/cool.gif

bassman : Did you get it sorted out? I was racking my brain yesterday..thought of BIOS stuff, but that doesn't apply..and then wondered if one can "change" the ID one puts into Windows when installing..but don't think that applies either. ???
